Peters (Ng\u0101ti Wai, Ng\u0101ti Hine, Ng\u0101puhi) also paid tribute to the Far North and his Kaikohe home.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot many people from Kaikohe receive these awards. This is as much about the wonderful people we have here as it is me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Northland leader Dover Samuels<\/a> \u2013 who was in Parliament at the same time as Peters and served under him at Northland Regional Council \u2013 said Peters will be missed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce again, we\u2019ve lost a t\u014dtara of the Far North.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was well-respected and a humble man with a spirit of generosity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Samuels cheekily suggested Peters\u2019 humble manner was the opposite of his better-known brother Winston.<\/p>\n

\u201cJim\u2019s humility of spirit touched the hearts of everyone who knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Northland MP Grant McCallum described Peters\u2019 contribution to the region as \u201cimmense\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would regularly see Jim and wife Robin at events in Northland,\u201d McCallum wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was always a gentleman and was obviously very supportive of his brother, Winston. He also would regularly offer me advice. My condolences to Robin and the wider Peters family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"JimJim Peters’ career included serving on Northland Regional Council from 1989 to 2007, chairing from 1995 to 2001.<\/p>\n

NZ First described Peters as a \u201cfoundational figure\u201d<\/a> whose legacy will long endure. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe was revered across the party for his quiet wisdom, integrity and principled guidance<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

A social media post from Northland College said: \u201cKua hinga te kauri i te waonui a T\u0101ne [a great tree has fallen in the great forest of T\u0101ne]\u201d.<\/p>\n

During his tenure, the school\u2019s roll grew to 80% M\u0101ori, making it one of the country\u2019s largest mainstream schools catering to M\u0101ori students. <\/p>\n
