he said.<\/p>\n<p>Labor mulls smart glasses ban<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">With growing community backlash over the increased availability of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/science-and-technology\/933579\/privacy-experts-warn-of-gaps-in-nz-law-as-camera-glasses-hit-kmart-shelves\" class=\"underline-brand-hover visited:text-foreground-secondary hover:visited:text-foreground-primary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more affordable smart glasses capable of secretly recording people<\/a>, the government has made its first move to rein in the technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Finance Minister Katy Gallagher has asked the Australian Public Service Commission for advice on the use of smart glasses across Commonwealth workplaces, including whether the technology should be &#8220;prohibited&#8221; and what exemptions might be appropriate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Gallagher said the Australian Public Service should always set the standard as a &#8220;model employer&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">&#8220;Smart glasses can raise legitimate privacy and security concerns, particularly because of their ability to record and capture information, and we need clear and consistent guidance for public servants,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">The government has already asked the nation&#8217;s Privacy Commissioner to give the use of smart glasses &#8220;priority consideration&#8221; amid widespread community concerns about their potential impact.<\/p>\n<p>National standards for data centres and training frontier AI<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">The government has also opened consultation on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/world\/723387\/australia-to-establish-government-ai-office-curb-data-centres-water-use\" class=\"underline-brand-hover visited:text-foreground-secondary hover:visited:text-foreground-primary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">national AI standards covering large data centres<\/a> and the training of frontier AI models in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">The proposed rules would set mandatory requirements for data centres covering power supply, energy costs, water use, location, community engagement and skills.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4JMFQCQ_e44b19fb71e4f8d0852bdc81e0c04af0_avif.jpeg\"  alt=\"Anthony Albanese says Australians need to be in charge of social media's extraordinary power.
