{"id":605250,"date":"2026-09-19T11:32:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-19T11:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/605250\/"},"modified":"2026-09-19T11:32:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T11:32:14","slug":"three-kayakers-rescued-after-capsizing-in-aucklands-maraetai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/605250\/","title":{"rendered":"Three kayakers rescued after capsizing in Auckland&#8217;s Maraetai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three kayakers wearing ill-fitting lifejackets have been rescued after capsizing off Auckland&#8217;s Maraetai this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Police were alerted to the capsize off Maraetai Coast Rd at around 12.50pm, Senior Constable Hayden Hall of the Auckland maritime unit said.<\/p>\n<p>The trio were found in the water by the Eagle police helicopter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the water temperature sitting at around 16C, A member of the Eagle crew entered the water and stayed with the group for approximately five minutes while the police maritime unit and Coastguard headed to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It appears all three were ill-prepared. Two kayakers were wearing poorly fitted lifejackets, while another put one on after being instructed to by Eagle,&#8221; Hall said. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/yellow-kayak-file-image-AMDTAQ4JWBFJJHXZSFD6T4CVD4.jpg\" alt=\"A kayaker (file image).\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-hi5x8q-0 cWTYyG image-metadata\">A kayaker (file image). (Source: istock.com)<\/p>\n<p>The group safely made it back to shore, with one suffering with hypothermia. <\/p>\n<p>Hall said the kayakers were lucky to have been found in a timely manner given the cold and windy conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a timely reminder that the conditions on the water can change quickly, and even a short time in cold water can be dangerous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anyone heading out on the water was advised to wear a properly fitted lifejacket, check the weather and marine conditions, and let someone know where they were going and when they were expected to return.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Three kayakers wearing ill-fitting lifejackets have been rescued after capsizing off Auckland&#8217;s Maraetai this afternoon.
