Yet all three contain lessons that apply just as much to investing as they do to life.<\/p>\n
The Snowball \u2013 Compound more than just money<\/p>\n
Alice Schroeder\u2019s biography of Warren Buffett is called The Snowball because Buffett once described life as being like rolling a snowball down a long hill. If you start with the right snow, on the right hill and keep it moving, it gathers more snow as it goes until it becomes something far bigger than where it started.<\/p>\n
Most people assume the snowball refers simply to Buffett\u2019s wealth \u2013 but it\u2019s much more than that.<\/p>\n
Over the decades, Buffett has accumulated knowledge. He accumulated trusted relationships. He accumulated a reputation for integrity. He accumulated wisdom through thousands of decisions \u2013 both good and bad. Every conversation, every book, every investment and every lesson became another layer of snow. Over time, that snowball became an extraordinary force.<\/p>\n
The lesson is that compounding isn\u2019t just about money. Knowledge compounds. Habits compound. Trust compounds. Friendships compound. Character compounds.<\/p>\n
We live in a world that celebrates overnight success, yet Buffett\u2019s life reminds us that the most meaningful achievements are usually built quietly over decades. Small, intelligent decisions, repeated long enough, become a remarkable force.<\/p>\n
Man\u2019s Search for Meaning \u2013 You always have a choice<\/p>\n
Viktor Frankl\u2019s Man\u2019s Search for Meaning is one of the most profound books I\u2019ve ever read.<\/p>\n
Frankl survived Nazi concentration camps, where he lost his parents, his brother and his wife. Few people have endured circumstances more horrific. Yet from that unimaginable suffering came one of the most enduring ideas about human nature.<\/p>\n
He wrote: \u201cEverything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms \u2013 to choose one\u2019s attitude in any given set of circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n
Frankl wasn\u2019t suggesting that we can control what happens to us. Life is often unfair, unpredictable and painful. His insight was that we always retain the freedom to choose how we respond to situations \u2013 good and bad.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s a lesson I\u2019ve found myself returning to repeatedly at Generate. We can\u2019t control whether markets rise or fall tomorrow. But we can control whether we panic, stay disciplined or take advantage of the opportunities volatility creates.<\/p>\n
The same principle applies well beyond investing. It isn\u2019t always easy and to this day, the right response often deserts me. But when you get it right, it\u2019s hugely empowering.<\/p>\n
Open \u2013 Success should serve a purpose<\/p>\n

Andre Agassi\u2019s autobiography Open surprised me more than almost any book I\u2019ve read.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s easy to assume it\u2019s a story mainly about resilience, determination and sporting greatness. However, I think its deeper message is something else entirely.<\/p>\n
Agassi\u2019s story isn\u2019t that success brings happiness. It\u2019s that success gives you the opportunity \u2013 and perhaps the responsibility \u2013 to decide what really matters.<\/p>\n
Despite winning Grand Slams, becoming world No 1 and achieving almost everything a tennis player could dream of, he openly admits that for much of his career, he didn\u2019t even enjoy tennis. It wasn\u2019t until later in life, through his family and his commitment to improving educational opportunities for disadvantaged children, that he found a deeper sense of purpose.<\/p>\n
That resonated with me because it raises an important question: what are we ultimately trying to achieve?<\/p>\n

But what gives me an extra spring in my step is knowing that Generate provides rewarding careers for about 250 staff and advisers. And it\u2019s making investments that create positive change, whether that\u2019s being the first KiwiSaver provider to invest in social housing, or Generate having invested more into New Zealand\u2019s venture capital industry than any other KiwiSaver provider.<\/p>\n
Kicking goals matters. But they can be a platform to deliver something more.<\/p>\n
Three books, one philosophy<\/p>\n
At first glance, these books have very little in common.<\/p>\n
One is about investing. One emerged from one of humanity\u2019s darkest chapters. One is about professional tennis.<\/p>\n
Yet together, they describe a surprisingly simple philosophy for investing and life.<\/p>\n
Buffett reminds us that our daily choices compound. The person we become is shaped by the habits we build, the people we surround ourselves with and the decisions we make over many years.<\/p>\n
Frankl reminds us that while we can\u2019t choose every circumstance, we can always choose our response. In the end, our attitude is one of the few things that is entirely ours.<\/p>\n
Agassi reminds us that success is not the destination. It simply gives us the opportunity \u2013 and perhaps the responsibility \u2013 to decide what really matters.<\/p>\n
Perhaps that\u2019s the lesson these three very different books share. Build your snowball patiently. Choose your response wisely. And remember that success isn\u2019t the finish line. Making a meaningful difference to the lives of others \u2013 whether it\u2019s one person or 1000 people \u2013 is what really matters.<\/p>\n
