Dunedin Mayor Sophie Barker said she was thrilled with the city\u2019s inclusion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe secret\u2019s out. This comes as no surprise to those of us who have long known of Dunedin\u2019s appeal, but it\u2019s great the rest of the world has caught on.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving our city, several of our attractions and tourism operators, and our neighbours in Waitaki recognised by Lonely Planet is a real feat considering the global competition out there.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said the recognition would put Dunedin in front of a massive audience and hoped it would increase visitor numbers.<\/p>\n
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston congratulated Dunedin on a \u201cwell-deserved selection\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is fantastic to see Dunedin recognised alongside international destinations. From its unique wildlife and dramatic coastline to its rich heritage, vibrant food scene and thriving arts and culture offerings, Dunedin has so much to offer visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Waitaki Mayor Mel Tavendale said the recognition was a proud moment for the district.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u014camaru and Waitaki is excited to attract such a plaudit from the world-renowned travel guide. This recognition celebrates not only the extraordinary places people can experience here, but also the generations of locals who have cared for the stories, landscapes and character that make our region so special.\u201d<\/p>\n
