Behind an established practice are years of convincing investors, earning trust one client at a time, making mistakes and learning what no textbook could teach.

For many MFDs, the first 100 clients are where the early lessons begin. These are the clients who test their patience, challenge their assumptions and, in many cases, change the way they eventually build their business. Some teach them what not to do, while others stay for decades and bring the next hundred along with them.

The first 100 clients of an MFD rarely arrive according to a business plan. They are usually friends, relatives, former colleagues, neighbours, referrals and people willing to take a chance on a new distributor. Their SIPs may be small and their portfolios modest, but collectively, they do something far more important – they shape the habits of the practice being built around them.

For Shifali Satsangee, those first relationships exposed the risk hiding in plain sight. For Trinath Lenka, they changed his understanding of what constitutes a client and how trust is built in the first place.

Years later, both see the first 100 differently. They were not simply the first milestone in an AUM journey. They were the testing ground for the practices they run today.

Building beyond one circle

Agra-based MFD Shifali Satsangee of Funds Vedaa discovered her biggest early mistake in a good market. Industry SIP flows were strong, yet inflows into her own practice slowed. The explanation had little to do with markets.

A local footwear and export trade, from which a large proportion of her first 100 clients came, was passing through a weak business cycle. Their cash flows slowed together. Top-ups stopped together. Lump-sum investments were postponed together.

On paper, she had built 100 client relationships. Economically, however, many of them behaved like a single exposure.

“I spent months telling investors never put all their eggs in one basket while running a practice that was precisely that,” she says.

That episode changed how she looked at her client book. Instead of seeing it merely as a collection of investors, she began viewing it like a portfolio – measuring concentration across families, professions, industries, age groups, cities and referral sources.

If she were building her first 100 again, Satsangee says she would deliberately mix salaried professionals, business families, retirees, young earners and women investors, while developing multiple independent referral channels.

Her lesson for a new MFD is sharper than simply “diversify”. A hundred clients are not necessarily a diversified business.

“If a single event, a sector slowdown or the loss of one referral relationship could unsettle a third of your business, you hold a position, not a practice.”

The first 100 clients taught Lenka to build relationships, not folios

For Trinath Lenka, Managing Director of Wallet4Wealth, the journey of building his first 100 clients was also a period of learning how trust is actually earned in financial services.

In the early years, Lenka says he was naturally focused on products, performance and numbers while convincing people to start investing. Like many MFDs starting out, there was an urge to demonstrate knowledge and explain why a particular investment made sense.

But as his client base grew, he realised that winning a client was not necessarily the same as winning the client’s trust.

Some of the hardest people to bring on board were those who had already suffered losses or received poor advice. Such clients could not be convinced in a single meeting. Lenka had to remain consistent, answer difficult questions, explain things repeatedly and, importantly, be available when markets were falling and investors were nervous.

Those first relationships gradually changed the way he approaches the business today. Instead of beginning a conversation with a product, he learnt to begin with the family – their goals, cash flows, responsibilities, risk appetite and the financial impact on the family if the primary earner was no longer around.

His advice to young MFDs trying to reach their first major milestone therefore comes down to one distinction:

“Don’t chase 100 clients. Build 100 relationships.”

The first hundred clients leave the longest lesson

An MFD may go on to serve hundreds or thousands of investors, but the first 100 are difficult to replace. They are where mistakes are made, trust is tested and the first real lessons of running a practice are learnt.

Years later, the numbers may become bigger, but those early relationships continue to influence how an MFD thinks about clients and the business.

If all clients come from one circle, they can expose concentration. If they are acquired mainly through performance conversations, they can expose a fragile proposition. And if they trust the MFD because of consistent conduct over time, they demonstrate the value of a relationship that cannot be manufactured through a sales pitch.

AUM can be accumulated later. Processes can be automated. Teams can be hired. But the first 100 clients quietly write the original code of an MFD practice.

Every MFD has a story that began long before the AUM grew, the team expanded or the referrals…

[14
138,183256,169975,122680,246,300126,300128,300127,183257,263823,129072,111,139,69,244,245,294703,294702,3505
post-609047","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-personal-finance","tag-business","tag-cafemutual","tag-client-acquisition","tag-client-retention","tag-finance","tag-first-100-clients","tag-mfd-business","tag-mfd-practice","tag-mfds","tag-mutual-fund-distribution","tag-mutual-fund-distributors","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-personal-finance","tag-personalfinance","tag-shifali-satsangee","tag-trinath-lenka","tag-wealth-management
["GET
