Vitamins are one type of supplement, but often, products branded as “supplements” are a combination of pure vitamins, whole-food ingredients, and sometimes, lab-compounded synthetic chemicals. The combination is where things get murky — and the shadowy lack of regulation is where things can potentially interact with your body in ways you don’t expect.

One-third of Americans think supplements are FDA-tested for safety before they hit shelves, according to a Consumer Reports survey. The agency only steps in to test a product after it’s already been sold to consumers, and usually only if something goes wrong.

Brands sometimes circumvent this because they know a badge builds trust with consumers. But labels on supplements aren’t always vetted, and often, brands will make their own.

So before you grab that bottle, here’s what to know:

Not Every Supplement Seal Is Created Equal

Vague phrases like “quality assured,” “third-party tested” or “developed by scientists” are ways that brands try to build trust with consumers. But those, on their own, don’t mean anything. It’s important to look for specific third party labels: NSF, USP, ConsumerLab, and UL Solutions are examples of third-party labels commonly recognized as four of the highest and most challenging standards for companies to achieve. A supplement company needs to pay thousands of dollars to have each product tested and approved.

If a supplement fails those tests, they can submit for retesting, though the timeline is unclear. Once a product is NSF-certified, for example, that means it’s accurately labeled, the amount of ingredient in the supplement matches what’s on the label, and it’s free of harmful contaminants or unlisted ingredients.

“When consumers see the NSF mark on a product, they can feel confident it’s undergone a rigorous, independent evaluation,” says David Trosin, senior director of nutrition and wellness at NSF, the nonprofit that’s been auditing consumer products for more than 80 years. (Editor’s note: theSkimm was invited on behalf of Nutrafol to tour the NSF factory, and some of our reporting comes from that trip.) That evaluation isn’t a one-time check. It includes document and label review, lab testing, facility inspections, and ongoing monitoring, explains Trosin, plus screening for contaminants like heavy metals, microbes, and pesticides that wouldn’t otherwise show up on a product’s label.

Here, how to find a product at four of the major testing companies:

These additional checks are more important than you might think: Consumer Reports tested 23 popular protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes in 2025 and found that over two-thirds contained more lead in a single serving than its food-safety experts consider safe to consume daily, some by over 10 times. There’s currently no federal limit on how much lead a supplement is allowed to contain, and companies aren’t required to test for it. That gap is exactly what third-party certification exists to close. (Consumer Reports keeps a running heavy metals testing hub if you want to check other categories.)

Seals can also guarantee that the ingredients advertised are the ones that are actually in the bottle. This is critical. Sometimes, supplements are recommended by a doctor and while they might not be prescribed, they’re typically taken to help prevent or treat serious health conditions. Prenatals are a good example: Consumer Reports recently tested 17 prenatal vitamins and found 15 brands had nutrient levels that didn’t match the label — which can directly impact a developing fetus. Taking a supplement that fails to deliver on the promises on the label poses a genuine health risk.

For NSF, specifically, the gold-standard version is “NSF Certified for Sport,” which screens for more than 300 substances banned by pro sports leagues, the NCAA, and the military. But dermatologist Heather Woolery-Lloyd, MD, chief medical advisor at hair-growth brand Nutrafol, says it’s become a useful shortcut for regular consumers too, since it means a product has cleared a bar well above the FDA’s bare minimum. Nutrafol became the first hair-growth supplement to earn that certification, and NSF keeps a running list of brands that have recently received this certification.

Other Things To Look For on a Supplement Label

Besides a third-party seal, there are other telltale signs to watch for. These might not show up on the label, so it’s worth searching the name of the supplement you’re interested in and looking for this info:

Published, peer-reviewed clinical data. Not “clinically tested.” Look at who was studied, for how long, and what was actually measured. How to find them? Search the brand and the phrase “clinically tested.” Studies that come up from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are a good starting point.

A real ingredient list with actual amounts. Sleep regulation becomes more interesting after you’ve toyed with all nighters in college and early adulthood. Perimenopause, which can start in your 30s, throws in a rotating cast of symptoms, including mood swings, joint aches, and hair loss.
