{"id":609933,"date":"2026-09-24T05:08:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T05:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/609933\/"},"modified":"2026-09-24T05:08:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T05:08:09","slug":"artificial-intelligence-visually-impaired-hail-ai-smart-glasses-despite-privacy-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/609933\/","title":{"rendered":"Artificial intelligence: Visually impaired hail AI smart glasses despite privacy concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">A University of Auckland student was also caught wearing smart glasses in a test.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">But Pic Picot, the founder of Pic\u2019s Peanut Butter, told Morning Report he purchased a pair of AI glasses a year and a half ago in Australia and it was life-changing.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Pic Picot.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Pic Picot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cImmediately, I could say, \u2018what am I looking at?\u2019 It would say, \u2018you\u2019re in a shop, there\u2019s a woman standing there and there\u2019s a rack of glasses behind her\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI went outside into the mall and all these shops that I\u2019d walked past, I had no idea what they are &#8230; I was able to read the shop signs; I was able to go into a store and read the prices on clothes and find my size of pants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was amazing &#8230; I could read the menu back in the hotel. It allowed me to do things I had never really been able to do before. I could use my phone to take a photo, enlarge it, zoom in, select the text and have it read aloud, but this was different. Suddenly, it felt like I could read again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Picot said it was \u201cone of the greatest bits of tech\u201d he had ever seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">He said he had previously tried using a big camera that clipped on to his glasses, which he described as \u201chideous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">The latest generation of smart glasses include Meta\u2019s Ray-Ban and Oakley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Picot said the glasses were transformative for visually impaired people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFor everyone who has trouble seeing, it\u2019ll be like being able to see again and it\u2019s a life-changer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Picot said the glasses even identified the environment for him, such as tree varieties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">He said it was a \u201cgreat time to be blind\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">However, Picot said it was terrifying to think what others might think of the glasses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf I put these things on, and people say, \u2018oh, there\u2019s a guy with those glasses, beat him up, kick him in the ditch\u2019 and all that sort of thing and it becomes, it\u2019s a really worrying thought,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut all the talk about them seems to have focused on this. We\u2019ve got cameras everywhere these days. You\u2019ve got cameras this side, you have cameras fitted to our clothes, the police have got them on their clothes. You\u2019re not giving permission for all these cameras to take pictures of you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m not taking pictures; I\u2019m just looking like people do with their eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A University of Auckland student was also caught wearing smart glasses in a test.
