Here’s What It Was Designed For

The modern gym is about 150 years old. The human body is about 300,000. For nearly all of that time, nobody lifted anything for its own sake. They walked, carried, dug, climbed, and occasionally sprinted, because survival required it.

The gym exists because modern life removed all of that. It is a good workaround. It is a bad model if you forget what it is standing in for.

What the original job looked like

The Hadza of Tanzania are one of the last full time hunter gatherer populations, and researchers put heart rate monitors and GPS trackers on them. They average about 75 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity, meeting a full week of U.S. exercise guidelines in two days. Hunters walk up to 12 miles on a single trip. Heart disease is almost nonexistent. And the activity does not drop with age the way it does in industrialized countries.

None of it happens in sets. It is long walking, loaded carrying, squatting to the ground and standing back up dozens of times a day, and short bursts of effort.

What the gym gets right

Heavy resistance training does one thing the original job did not do well: it builds and keeps muscle into old age. Hunter gatherers stay lean and mobile, but they do not get strong in the way a man who lifts progressively for a decade gets strong. Modern lifting is an upgrade on the ancestral pattern, not a copy of it.

What the gym gets wrong

It replaces 75 minutes of daily movement with 45 minutes three times a week, then sends you back to a chair. The lifts are stable and symmetric. The floor is flat. Nothing is awkward. That is why so many well trained men get hurt lifting a sofa and why dad strength, built by years of odd loads, still surprises people.

How to train like the body expects

Walk every day, ideally on uneven ground. The backward walk and a hilly route both count. This is the base the gym sits on, not a substitute for it.

Carry heavy things. Farmer’s carries, suitcase carries, a loaded sandbag. Two sets at the end of a session.

Get up and down off the floor. Deep squats, step ups, lunges. The Hadza do this constantly. Most men do it never.

Hang. A daily dead hang restores the shoulder and grip function the body assumes you still use.

Keep lifting. Three heavy sessions a week for what the ancestral pattern never gave you.

The gym is not the problem. Treating it as the whole solution is. Add the movement it was built to replace, and the lifting works better.

This article is for informational purposes only and is not medical, legal, or financial advice.
