Slower speed limits for state highways in parts of Otago come into force from next week.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the\u00a0limit on State Highway 8 at the southern end of Ettrick, south of Roxburgh, would\u00a0reduce from 100km\/h to\u00a080km\/h.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0230-metre-long section of highway\u00a0is where a hill limits visibility, making it hard to judge when it\u00a0is\u00a0safe to turn on and off the road, the New Zealand Transport Agency said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

In North Otago,\u00a0the speed limit on SH1 will change\u00a0through Hampden, south of Oamaru, from Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The limit would reduce\u00a0north of the town centre\u00a0(between\u00a0Lancaster St and\u00a0Shrewsbury St) from\u00a0from 80kmh to 70kmh;\u00a0and through the town centre (Shrewsbury St to Nottingham St) from\u00a060kmh to 50kmh.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This part of SH1 passes through a busy area with shops, cafes, and civic services such as a library and a police station.\u00a0The reduced speed will make getting around safer for everyone,\u201d a spokesman for NZTA said.<\/p>\n

It is estimated the changes would add just seconds to people\u2019s travel time.<\/p>\n

NZTA said it made\u00a0decisions about changing speed limits after reviewing things such as travel times, technical assessments\u00a0and\u00a0public\u00a0feedback.<\/p>\n
