She called Gilbert a \u201clegend in the scene\u201d who shaped her life \u201cin beautiful ways\u201d and helped define pop-punk and hard-core. \u201cHis influence and attitude guided the genre forward. His passion for fostering the community was inspiring and sticks with me,\u201d Williams wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmufoc6fx00183b7eezvbr71f@published\" data-word-count=\"101\">Williams and Gilbert started dating in 2008 and married in 2016 after a two-year engagement before splitting up in 2017. At the time of their separation, Gilbert and Williams said they remained \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/music\/news\/paramore-hayley-williams-new-found-glory-chad-gilbert-separate-statement-1202486092\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">close friends<\/a> who are good in each other\u2019s eyes.\u201d This April, Gilbert \u2014 who underwent treatment for adrenal cancer in 2021 \u2014 told <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/chad-gilbert-stage-4-cancer-got-my-dream-in-my-family-exclusive-11946964\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">People<\/a> he\u2019d been diagnosed with stage-four adrenocortical carcinoma after doctors discovered three tumors in his brain and gave him emergency surgery.
