{"id":610949,"date":"2026-09-25T02:44:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T02:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/610949\/"},"modified":"2026-09-25T02:44:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T02:44:11","slug":"meta-launches-camera-free-ai-glasses-muse-charm-pendant-amid-privacy-pushback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/610949\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta launches camera-free AI glasses, Muse Charm pendant amid privacy pushback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Smart glasses let wearers take photos, film videos, listen to music, make phone calls, translate text or interact with an AI assistant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">The audio-only versions will complement the release of dozens of new models that keep the photo and video filming option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Building in privacy features such as a recording indicator light was \u201creally important\u201d, Meta\u2019s vice-president of AI product, Vishal Shah, told AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe wanted people to clearly understand that this was something that was recording, and we\u2019ve only made that light more explicit over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe said a lot about that when the glasses first launched, and I think we probably need to keep repeating that more than we have been more recently because none of that\u2019s changed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">With nearly four billion monthly active users across its ecosystem, Meta is betting that wearables like smart glasses can become an easy entry point for people to use its AI software.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Meta launched its first smart glasses in 2021, and last year unveiled \u201cdisplay\u201d glasses that project images on to the lens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Earlier this year, it released its Meta-branded AI glasses, separate from its partnership with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, which produces several Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Meta also announced several new styles of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/meta-smart-glasses-released-in-new-zealand-amid-australian-bans\/D2SMM3JRDBDLXFJCHGJS2MMMQY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/meta-smart-glasses-released-in-new-zealand-amid-australian-bans\/D2SMM3JRDBDLXFJCHGJS2MMMQY\/\">flagship Meta Ray-Bans. <\/a>The display version, priced from US$799, will soon be available in new markets including Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/meta-smart-glasses-released-in-new-zealand-amid-australian-bans\/D2SMM3JRDBDLXFJCHGJS2MMMQY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/meta-smart-glasses-released-in-new-zealand-amid-australian-bans\/D2SMM3JRDBDLXFJCHGJS2MMMQY\/\">and New Zealand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">The company will soon launch mixed-reality glasses that are much lighter than its earlier Quest VR headsets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Called Meta VR Glasses, they are powered by an external battery and memory pack tethered by a cord, allowing the headset itself to be lighter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Zuckerberg said the glasses weighed about as much as a deck of cards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">They have no external controls, relying instead on hand gestures and voice commands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">The VR Glasses will launch in spring 2027 for US$1299.<\/p>\n<p>Meta Muse <\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">Meta has spent billions of dollars to stay competitive in AI but faces pushback on multiple fronts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zEEGoQobVQRR\" style=\"display:none\">The glasses are designed to work with Muse, Meta\u2019s first agentic app for consumers.
