If you ask most people to picture a G-Shock, they\u2019ll more than likely conjure up a $100 armored watch. But since 1996, Casio has also been running MR-G, which is their made-in-Japan flagship line built to prove the toughest name in watchmaking can also hang in actual luxury territory. That line turns 30 this year, and Casio is marking the occasion with one of the most artful watches it\u2019s ever put out in the new MRG-B2100HR-1A.<\/p>\n

\nA Kyoto Master on the Assembly Line<\/p>\n

The headliner here is Hiroto Rakusho, a Nishijin-born metal leaf artist certified by Japan\u2019s government as a Master of Traditional Crafts. Rakusho created an original artwork titled Haruka (eternity) for the anniversary, then applied that newly built world into a stunning watch.<\/p>\n

The dial\u2019s raised lattice, modeled after kigumi wood joinery, gets powdered platinum leaf applied by Rakusho\u2019s own hands. He personally finishes every one of the 800 pieces, and that means that no two dials will be the same.<\/p>\n

\nColor Without a Drop of Pigment<\/p>\n

The bezel and bracelet pull their iridescence from a different discipline entirely. There\u2019s no paint found anywhere on this watch. Instead, an ultrashort-pulse laser carves micron-level textures into the metal. It\u2019s a technique that bends light the same way a butterfly\u2019s wing does in nature.<\/p>\n

Casio calls it structural color and the end product drifts beautifully between blues, greens, and coppery pinks as your wrist moves. <\/p>\n

\nStill a G-Shock Under All That Art<\/p>\n

Beneath all of the artistry sits the MRG-B2100, which is still considered the undisputed peak of the \u201cCasiOak\u201d family. Its 27-piece bezel is topped in Cobarion, a cobalt-chrome alloy roughly four times harder than pure titanium. Meanwhile, DAT55G handles the bracelet and Ti64 is found on the case, and all of it has been finished off in a DLC coating to prevent scratches over time. <\/p>\n

And because it\u2019s a G-SHOCK after all, you still get shock resistance, 200m of water resistance, and set-and-forget timekeeping via Tough Solar, Multi-Band 6, and Bluetooth. For reference, the standard MRG-B2100 runs $4,800 stateside.<\/p>\n
