Taylor Swift has been doing a lot of therapeutic reflecting \u2014 and it\u2019s showing up in her lyrics. In \u201cPink Clouding,\u201d one of the four new tracks<\/a> released as part of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore on Sept. 25, the singer looks back on a past relationship, and her word choice is surprisingly psychological.<\/p>\n

In \u201cPink Clouding,\u201d Swift describes a relationship where she overpromised, and ended up hurting her partner in the process (fans have theorized that the ex in question is Tom Hiddleston<\/a>). While that experience might be a relatable one to listeners (no matter what end of the equation you\u2019ve found yourself on), there are a few terms sprinkled throughout the song that might be less familiar \u2014 including the title itself. Here, a mental health expert unpacks the true meaning behind the lyrics.<\/p>\n

What Does \u201cPink Clouding\u201d Mean, Anyway?<\/p>\n

With the term \u201cpink clouding,\u201d Swift put her own spin on a term commonly used by mental health professionals. According to Bonnie Lambert<\/a>, PMHNP-BC, LPC, a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and licensed counselor, the phrase \u201cclouds of pink” refers to the period during recovery where a person experiences extreme hopefulness, increased confidence, or elevated energy levels. <\/p>\n

\u201cThese feelings are beneficial and can help motivate individuals,\u201d Lambert says. \u201cHowever, these feelings may cause an individual to underestimate the continued effort required for their long-term success.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the song, Swift sings, \u201cI was pink clouding from the thrill of it \/ Skydiving as you wrapped your arms around my body.\u201d Applying Lambert\u2019s definition of the phrase, it sounds like Swift felt like she got ahead of herself, and entered this new relationship before she was fully healed from her past.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would understand \u2018pink clouding\u2019 to be when you are totally caught up in an emotional high from a relationship or experience. In this emotional state, everything is better; things appear brighter and have greater promise,\u201d Lambert says. <\/p>\n

But at the same time, Swift was so focused on her positive emotions, that she may have been missing important negative ones.<\/p>\n

What About \u201cGray Rocking?\u201d<\/p>\n

Following her \u201cpink clouding\u201d line in the chorus, Swift utilizes another psychological term, singing \u201cGray rockin’ where the arrow hit \/ Years later, I still wonder how to tell you sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Lambert, \u201cgray rocking\u201d is when someone delivers short and unemotional responses in order to avoid engaging with a person they\u2019re trying to keep at a distance. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe primary purpose for using this technique is to prevent fueling further conflict or an unproductive relationship,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

In \u201cPink Clouding,\u201d however, Swift uses gray rocking in order to avoid addressing pain from her past, preventing her from being honest and communicative with her partner. The juxtaposition of the two terms tells the story of this relationship\u2019s downfall.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile individuals experiencing \u2018pink clouds\u2019 are overwhelmed with emotion, a person who is engaging in \u2018gray rock\u2019 is intentionally neutral and less reactive,\u201d Lambert says. \u201cThe transition may indicate the shift from an emotional investment in the relationship to a protection mechanism such as separation or detachment.\u201d<\/p>\n
