The ACT Party is pledging to crack down on noisy vehicles and hike fines for drivers causing a nuisance.

It wants to spend $2 million on buying and installing 20 relocatable noise cameras, initially rolling them out in Tāmaki.

A noise camera is used to detect particular sounds and then identify and record the vehicle they come from, information from the NZTA website said.

ACT Tāmaki candidate James Christmas said his election campaign door-knocking missions had drawn consistent pleas to do something about noisy neighbourhoods.

“People should be able to sleep, relax and enjoy their homes, without having their street turned into someone else’s racetrack,” he said.

“I can see the attraction for boy racers to come to Tāmaki, but it’s not fair on the families and working people who have their life disrupted, just because they live in a great location with nice streets.”

Such disturbance was already illegal, but effective currently, enforcement relies on a police officer being in the right place at the right time, Christmas said.

Christmas said noise cameras would capture evidence of offending the moment it happened.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins said everyone generally was “a bit sick of boy racers”, but ACT’s timing was transparent.

“I’ve been fighting for a local community in my own electorate for the last three years to get any government agency to take it seriously.

“There is certainly more work to be done on boy racers and on the noise and the nuisance that they’re creating, but suddenly doing this in an election campaign when they’ve ignored the issue for the last three years looks a bit rich,” he said.

[3
42,43,40,38,41,39
post-612322","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories
["GET
