Most sitcoms that turn into major hits only produce a few actors who become TV breakout stars, leaving with bigger and better careers than they had when the series began. But then, there are the comedies where every main member of the original cast goes on to be a genuine star. Many iconic sitcoms have been the springboard for massive notoriety over the years, with actors like Tina Fey, Neil Patrick Harris, and the iconic Lucille Ball all experiencing major career boosts from the series that made them household names.

While it’s not common for any show to be stacked with wall-to-wall megastars, quite a few sitcoms have managed to introduce the world to an impressive amount of new A-list talent all at once. The genre has this wonderful tendency to propel fresh talent to new heights when all of the elements of a series — performances, writing, direction, and premise — truly click with audiences. With that in mind, here are five sitcoms where every member of the original cast became a big star.

Friends

"Joey

NBC

This might be the most obvious entry on this list, but how can you talk about shows where every cast member hit it big without immediately bringing up “Friends?” The 1994 NBC sitcom is an absolute classic — and when the series kicked off, the cast were basically unknowns. Of course, that didn’t last very long. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer shot to stardom over the first few seasons thanks to their electric and hilarious on-screen chemistry. The show enjoyed 10 wonderful seasons on air before ending in 2004.

Aniston’s film career catapulted during her time on “Friends” and has continued strong for years since the series ended, with credits like “Bruce Almighty,” “Along Came Polly,” and “We’re the Millers.” She eventually returned to TV in 2019 with Apple TV’s “The Morning Show.” Perry and Schwimmer helmed several major TV and film projects during and after their time on the sitcom, while LeBlanc led his own spin-off series, “Joey.” Cox and Kudrow also went on to do major film and television projects during and after the show ended, like the “Scream” film franchise for Cox and Kudrow’s “The Comeback” on HBO. Though the “Friends” fame was swift and mighty, the cast has spoken at length about the difficulties of being so deeply embedded in the public eye.

Cheers

"Woody

NBC

The iconic sitcom “Cheers” was truly a show where we knew everybody’s name. It aired for 11 seasons over ten years on NBC and became a major mainstream TV hit despite initially risking getting canceled early on for low viewership. The cast subsequently blew up, eventually helping to mint the series as one of the greatest of its genre. “Cheers” boasted an impressive cast of characters as its Boston bar regulars. Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson, Bebe Neuwirth, Kirstie Alley, and Shelley Long (whose early departure from the series shocked fans) would all go on to become major stars thanks to their work on the series, with many being nominated and winning Emmys and Golden Globes for their performances.

After the show, Danson — who thought he wasn’t fit for the sex symbol label he was given through the series — led major projects like “Damages” and “The Good Place” after his star-making turn and his film breakout in “Three Men and a Baby.” For Perlman, she would keep working alongside her then-husband Danny DeVito, as well as appear in other mainstream projects, including 2023’s “Barbie.” Harrelson has since become a very successful mainstream movie star, even now with the upcoming “Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” while Neuwirth, Long, and Wendt each established themselves as memorable comedic character actors in the zeitgeist. Grammer was the one who inked the spin-off deal, though, giving the world the successful follow-up, “Frasier.”

Parks and Recreation

"Tom

NBC

The mockumentary style of comedy had something of a heyday in American television in the mid-aughts, and one of the show’s catering to that was “Parks and Recreation.” The NBC sitcom, which aired for seven seasons from 2009 to 2015, had a shaky first season, but the show really hit its stride in Season 2. Naturally, the show’s hilarious ensemble cast found themselves blowing up, too.

Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Retta, Chris Pratt, and Ben Schwartz all went on to see not only career success through the series, but also a sense of being cemented into the zeitgeist through memes and enduring jokes from the series that were relatable on a massive scale (Schwartz, Ansari, and Retta specifically benefitted a ton here as the faces of some of the show’s most popular gags).

Poehler found greater mainstream success following her dedicated work in “Saturday Night Live,” while Pratt shot to stardom with the one-two punch of “Parks and Rec” and the MCU movie “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Even veteran actor Rob Lowe saw a massive boost in his cred — especially since it was nearly 30 years after he saw career heights in the 1980s as a Brat Pack heartthrob. The group is still considered one of the best comedy casts to ever do it, and for good reason. Just look at their careers now.

The Office

"Andy

NBC

Before there was “Parks and Rec,” there was “The Office.” “The Office” was a mockumentary sitcom based on a British show of the same name, and has come to be considered one of the best sitcoms ever made. The NBC series owed much of its strength and memorability to its killer cast, nearly all of which have become major talents memorialized for their work on the series. Steve Carell and John Krasinski grew into A-listers and huge presences in Hollywood through the show, culminating in awards recognition for Carell’s work in 2015’s “Foxcatcher” and Krasinski’s acclaim for “The Quiet Place,” which he directed, co-wrote, and starred in.

Krasinski even told the “Today” show that being known as Jim Halpert is one of the biggest honors of his career. Mindy Kaling and Ed Helms also saw major spikes in popularity that led to Kaling’s hit show “The Mindy Project” and Helms’ work in “The Hangover.” Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, B.J. Novak, and Melora Hardin have also enjoyed robust acting careers following the series, while mainstays like Angela Kinsey, Oscar Nuñez, Leslie David Baker, Phyllis Smith, Creed Bratton, Paul Lieberstein, Brian Baumgartner, and Kate Flannery became icons simply because of their roles on the show.

Seinfeld

"Kramer,

NBC

“Seinfeld” was an absolute force of nature when it burst onto the scene in 1989. The series has since built a reputation for being one of the most significant and influential sitcoms in TV history due to an excellent marriage of realism and comedy that felt endlessly relatable. Alongside lead Jerry Seinfeld, actors Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Michael Richards rounded out the main cast. Their on-screen chemistry and comedic timing proved exactly why they were chosen to prop up the series. Those qualities brought out the show’s authenticity and accessibility — and thanks to years of excellence on a generational hit series, they went on to become unforgettable major stars.

Seinfeld capitalized on the massive recognition of the series to continue his reign in stand-up comedy, which led to many appearances on television shows as himself in various capacities (including his own 2012 talk show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”). Alexander was nominated for seven consecutive Emmys for his part in the show and had an extensive career in film and television in the years following “Seinfeld.” Louis-Dreyfus has become an esteemed award winner, with a large amount of Emmy wins. Richards, for his part, was on a high following the “Seinfeld” run, but a controversial stand-up performance in 2006 significantly diminished his career.
