New Zealand\u2019s snow forecast centers on a South Island storm already underway, with Canterbury receiving the most remaining snow on Sunday and severe wind threatening skiing on Ruapehu. Porters now narrowly leads Mt. Hutt for forecast accumulation, a shift from the earlier outlook.<\/p>\n

The heaviest South Island snow falls Sunday morning through midafternoon, with guidance agreeing on the timing but differing on amounts, especially around Queenstown. As temperatures fall to around \u22127\u00b0C at Mt. Hutt, snow levels drop well below resort bases and the snow becomes less dense. Gusts near 80 km\/h could disturb exposed snow. Porters is closed for the season<\/a>, and Mount Dobson has also ended its lift season<\/a>, so their totals describe mountain snowfall without lift access. Treble Cone\u2019s scheduled season ends Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ruapehu\u2019s strongest precipitation and wind arrive Sunday afternoon, followed by lighter showers through Tuesday. Snow levels start near or above Turoa\u2019s base, then fall below 1,100 meters as temperatures drop. The first snow will be very dense; colder snow later should improve, though gusts approaching 180 km\/h at Turoa could disrupt exposed lifts and damage snow surfaces. Whakapapa\u2019s current report<\/a> shows some lifts operating, but conditions may change quickly.<\/p>\n

By Tuesday evening, the organized precipitation has ended, and guidance offers little support for another substantial storm into early October. Sunday\u2019s timing and the remaining snowfall through Tuesday are the firmest part of this forecast. Any later flurries look too isolated for a useful accumulation estimate.<\/p>\n
