\u201cI was so swept up in early stages of relationships that I overlooked deeper stuff,\u201d Lesina reflects. \u201cWe view things really differently and neither perspective is right or wrong, but there was too much we didn\u2019t gel on. Like communication and conflict resolution. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always important that each person in a partnership really understands their own attachment styles as well as the other person\u2019s. Without that, unhelpful patterns can start forming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Lesina remained \u201csuper-hopeful\u201d they would pull through. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was holding onto glimpses of the good times, but that wasn\u2019t our reality. The bad times were outweighing the good.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two even attended therapy but ultimately ended their engagement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI genuinely thought he was The One and I\u2019d never felt that before. It was a hard thing to let go of because I thought, \u2018What if I don\u2019t feel that again?\u2019 But I\u2019ve realised love alone isn\u2019t enough to keep a healthy, sustainable relationship alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Loved ones showered her with support after the split, turning up for sleepovers, dinner dates and movie nights. <\/p>\n

Lesina has since been working on herself and reflecting on how they each contributed to the relationship\u2019s breakdown. She\u2019s also been reading relationship guide Attached and Secure<\/a>, and utilising her \u201chappy list\u201d, which includes nature walks with her bestie and Duck Island\u2019s milk chocolate fudge ice cream.<\/p>\n

And while she remains busy with an intense five-year training programme to become an ear, nose and throat surgeon, she\u2019s also getting back out there.<\/p>\n

Lesina shares, \u201cIt\u2019s been easier than entering the dating scene after previous break-ups because I know myself and my needs so well now, which is empowering. <\/p>\n

\u201cHaving a cool, aloof partner\u2019s spicy and exciting, but I need someone who\u2019s stable and grounded. It sounds boring, but I live such a big life with so much going on, so I need someone who\u2019s happy, secure and supportive of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The split isn\u2019t the only low Lesina has endured in recent months. She\u2019s still devastated by the loss of her bestie Thinh, who went swimming one weekend in Tauranga and drowned. Lesina was at work when she got a call from police who were trying to contact his family in Vietnam.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a hard one,\u201d she says. \u201cMore tears than the break-up. He was so young and bright, so it was totally tragic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The low was followed by the high of her visit to sister Shani and brother-in-law Eric in New York, where her family gathered for Christmas and Santiago\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were there six weeks and went to the hospital with her. We\u2019re that family where they have to go, \u2018OK, visiting hours are done now!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt reminded how much I can\u2019t wait to have my own kids,\u201d admits Lesina, who\u2019s considering freezing her eggs. \u201cOf course, now I\u2019m like, \u2018Who am I going to have kids with?\u2019 But on social media, so many people are like, \u2018I\u2019m a late mum,\u2019 which is encouraging. I\u2019ll face any challenges when the time comes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m still excited for all those things and haven\u2019t lost hope. I\u2019m big on manifesting, so it\u2019ll happen, but my person\u2019s just taking a while.
