What a difference a day makes. On Saturday night, US Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker was practically despondent over the situation facing the Americans. They were trailing an undermanned International team 10½-7½, and Snedeker pointed a lot of the blame at himself for the situation they faced, a heavy favourite now looking at possibility of an historic defeat.

“I tried to work my tail off to put these guys in the best situation possible, and I don’t think I’ve done a very good job this week to be where we are right now,” Snedeker said in a stunning act of admission. “They look to me to put them in the best position where they’re comfortable. I hold myself to a high standard. I don’t think I’ve done the best job for them in that room.”

Come Sunday, however, Snedeker boasted about the heart that his 12 players showed at Medinah, the team rallying with the most dominant Sunday singles performance in the history of the event and capping a comeback that rivaled the one the Europeans pulls off at this course in the 2012 Ryder Cup.

Snedeker deserved to be proud of his group. But in the euphoria of victory, he might have spoken a little too boastfully during an interview on SiriusXM PGA Tour radio

“This team is going to be a problem in Ireland,” Snedeker said.

Maybe it is, but that quote is likely going to be a problem too. The European Ryder Cup team doesn’t let even the slightest of slights be forgotten. And in the span of 10 words, Luke Donald just got fresh bulletin board material.

Think we’re exaggerating? All you have to do is remember what Keegan Bradley said in the afterglow of the 2024 Presidents Cup win at Royal Montreal.

“We’re gonna go to Bethpage to kick their f—ing ass!”

OK, Snedeker wasn’t quite as blunt, but the Europeans know how to squeeze out every ounce of hostility from even the most innocuous of quotes and turn it into motivation. In the process, next year’s US Ryder Cup captain, Jim Furyk, might have just seen his job at Adare Manor get a bit harder. – Ryan Herrington

8:50am Give credit to the Americans for pulling off a dominating performance in Sunday singles to come back and win the Presidents Cup. By going 9-2-1 in the one-on-one session, the US overcame a three-point deficit to win 17-13. And they did it by doing the thing they didn’t do the first three days at Medinah: win holes down the stretch. On Sunday, American players won 22 holes over the 12 matches on the back nine. Interestingly, 12 of those wins came with pars, hinting at the notion that the Internationals might have finally run out of gas. – Ryan Herrington

8:25am The only player on Team USA not to lose a match. However, it was particularly bad at Medinah on Sunday as the Canadian lost the first four holes of his match with Justin Thomas before losing 5-and-3. Anyway, as of late Sunday afternoon, Data Golf had Conners at an insanely bad -4.62 strokes gained: putting, a full THREE shots worse than anyone else on the greens. Yikes. – Alex Myers

7am Scottie Scheffler got a little testy with NBC reporter Cara Banks. As insufferable as athletes have made this saying, Scottie Scheffler likes to “keep the main thing the main thing.” The main thing being golf. He doesn’t really want to talk about much else. Not LIV, not politics and certainly not the decision, whether it was his or US captain Brandt Snedeker’s, to sit out Saturday afternoon’s foursomes session at the Presidents Cup. The thing Scheffler doesn’t understand, of course, is that golf fans were very puzzled by that move, and wanted to know more about what went into it. Banks was doing her job asking Scheffler about it on Sunday, but the World No.1 was irked by the timing of it. He had just won his singles match against Nico Echavarria, earning the Americans another huge point:

Ok then!

Both the question, and the response, are perfectly fair. We’re sure this won’t become an oddly polarising moment on the internet or anything … – Christopher Powers

6:40: Finally, Match 23 goes to the Internationals courtesy of Sungjae Im. Geoff Ogilvy’s men lead 12.5-10.5 but there’s literally no more yellow on the leaderboard right now. Worrying signs. They need to conjure up three more wins from the seven remaining matches. Can they do it?

6.38am: Matsuyama misses from three feet after a Morikawa bomb, bringing their match back to all square and leaving the leaderboard with no yellow on it. What’s happening?

5am: True to form, US President Donald Trump made himself the main character at Medinah on Sunday. He orchestrated an Air Force One flyover that our colleagues onsite said literally “rattled the media centre” A short while later, his walk out at the first tee drew a chorus of cheers and jeers from the crowd [below], before he delivered a brief speech and stepped back to greet each player as they arrived for their matches. That’s when the real fun began, as the leader of the free world took the opportunity to engage in a bit gamesmanship with International elder statesman Adam Scott. Check it out:

The ol’ tug of war is one President Trump’s favourite moves. He’s used it on everyone from political adversaries to fellow world leaders over the years in an effort to establish dominance. As we wrote on Friday after Scott buried a long birdie putt to silence a heckler, however, if you’re going to come at Adam Scott, you better dot your Ts and cross your Is. The Aussie has the looks, the style and, most importantly, the skill to hang against just about any opposition. He has effortlessly avoided controversy throughout his career and rarely lets emotions get the best of him. If you’re trying to fluster an International player, may we suggest Nico Echavarria?

Jokes aside, the US team needs all the help they can get as they attempt to come back from a three-point deficit and avoid an embarrassing loss on home soil to what looked to be one the weakest International squads ever on paper. If that means calling in a few favours with the President, then so be it.

Monday 4am (AEST): US President Donald Trump is here at Medinah. After a report that Trump requested to speak for 15 minutes at the Presidents Cup, the 45th and 47th commander-in-chief spoke for less than a minute, noting that while PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp asked him to make a speech, he’d rather just watch golf. There was a small crack at the “fake news media” reporting he would be received poorly after cheers to his arrival; otherwise, nothing inflammatory from Trump. On Medinah Road near the course, dozens of pro- and anti-Trump demonstrators took over separate corners, waving flags and signs. He is expected to stay on property and award the winners the trophy later today.

5pm: Can the US rally at Medinah? Breaking down the Sunday singles matches. For all that is made about how the Ryder Cup is more compelling than the Presidents Cup for myriad reasons, the junior of the international team competitions outdoes its elder in one compelling department: the session pairings.

In the Ryder Cup, captains and their assistants have to decide on their lineups and deliver them in a sealed envelope. That requires strategic guesswork in some cases, with a bit of educated anticipation thrown in.

Similar to your fantasy team draft, the Presidents Cup features a live game of cat-and-mouse, with decisions sometimes made on the fly depending on how the draw is shaping up.

“You can kind of have a little bit of control with half of this pairings thing,” Internationals captain Geoff Ogilvy said on Saturday night at Medinah, “but you can lose control pretty quick as the whole thing … it’s like a snake draft. That’s interesting. We had a sort of general idea, but we just let it unfold as it goes.”

We have no way of knowing if either team celebrated with fist pumps behind closed doors after the Sunday singles matches for this Presidents Cup were decided, but the results were interesting enough to wonder who thinks they came out on top.

Ogilvy said “we had some ideas” about a lineup as he anticipated that US captain Brandt Snedeker would front-load his lineup because the Americans are trailing 10½-7½, and the American skipper seemingly did that with players who have produced better statistics this week, if not always good results.

But Ogilvy didn’t necessarily counterpunch with his heavyweights in the early going. To wit: He put Nico Echavarria, who has only played once (and lost), against World No.1 Scottie Scheffler in Match No.4. And for Match 6, Ogilvy chose Christiaan Bezuidenhout, another one-match guy (who won), against arguably America’s second-best player for the week, Chris Gotterup.

At the bottom is where the Internationals are stacked, with their last four players combining for a 9-4-1 record this week. The US countered with players who are 2-6-1.

So, it is even more incumbent for the US to get red on the board early or it could be a very long day.

A look at the singles matchups, from both an American (Todd Leonard) perspective and an Aussie (AGD editor-in-chief Brad Clifton) take:

Cameron Young vs Ryo Hisatsune

Leonard: Young, even after losing his first two matches, has been the strongest American player, with he and Gotterup securing two points together on Saturday. His strokes gained total of 9.40 total is by far the best on his squad. Hisatsune is 1-1 and was carried a lot by Hideki Matsuyama in their win.
Clifton: Young is a legitimate gun and will be hard to beat here. Hisatsune has been a solid partner for his countryman Matsuyama but I feel singles is where Young truly shines, particularly on an increasingly firmer Medinah layout.

Advantage: Young

• • •

Wyndham Clark vs Tom Kim

Leonard: Clark has had a bizarre week. He has the second-best US overall SG at 5.41 and most SG in putting, but his record is 1-3. Kim has seemingly toned down his antics a bit, and that might be because it seems like his constant partner Si Woo Kim has considerably outplayed him in them going 3-1.
Clifton: Clark has been a standout for the Yanks and I’m not surprised he’s been pushed out early as they look to close the deficit as quickly as possible. Kim is a big momentum player and, if he can win an early hole or two, look out – those antics will return for all to see.

Advantage: Clark

• • •

Justin Thomas vs Corey Conners

Kevin C. Cox

Leonard: Thomas gets deserved respect for his match-play prowess, but he’s 1-1-1 and has seemingly played progressively worse, with his negative SG reaching a team-worst 5.01. Corey Conners has been just OK in going 2-2, and there is this strange stat for JT: He’s 3-0 in singles in the Ryder Cup and 0-3 in the Presidents Cup. Will his love for Medinah turn that around?
Clifton: Toss of the coin for me. Neither has blown me away this week but I can see Thomas getting a lift from the crowd and sneaking home in this one.

Advantage: Thomas

• • •

Scottie Scheffler vs Nico Echavarria

Leonard: Who doesn’t love a good underdog story? This one qualifies, with No.1 Scheffler taking on the Colombian who is World No.61. But this is matchplay, and Echavarria has nothing to lose after playing only once and badly (minus-5.37 SG) in a Day 1 defeat. And remember, Scheffler has not been a singles beast, with a combined record of 2-2-1 in the Cups.
Clifton: The classic sacrificial-lamb move from Ogilvy. With only 5 wins required to win the Presidents Cup, why waste one of your heavy hitters on the world’s best player? With that said, Echavarria, too, has been one of the more impressive players over the past 12 months and will put in a good showing. But Scottie’s benching for Saturday’s foursomes will have him fired up and ready to close out his year on a high.

Advantage: Scheffler

• • •

Sam Burns vs Sungjae Im

Leonard: Two players who will be venturing out for a fifth time this week. Who has more stamina? Neither played particularly well in their afternoon foursomes matches, each part of a losing team. But throughout the week, Burns has been excellent in some clutch spots. And we know he can putt.
Clifton: Another close call, this one. Sungjae has an uncanny ability to get on a run but you just feel at some pint, Burns’ flatstick is going to fire. This HAS to be the occasion or we can start organising the champagne.

Advantage: Burns

• • •

Chris Gotterup vs Christiaan Bezuidenhout

Sarah Stier

Leonard: Gotterup was a monster on Saturday in a pair of wins with Cam Young, and now has a feel for the team matchplay environment. Bezuidenhout hasn’t hit a ball since Friday, and that was in a foursomes win with Adam Scott. So this will be his first round playing his own ball. Good luck.
Clifton: One of the match-ups I’m really looking forward to. Gotterup is an absolute baller but write off the big South African at your peril. Bezuidenhout’s Presidents Cup record is 3-1-1 and I have a feeling that will read 4-1-1 come Sunday afternoon. Love Gotterup’s no-nonsense approach but I think there could be some added leaderboard pressure on his mind here as teammates start dropping holes around him.

Advantage: Gotterup

• • •

Collin Morikawa vs Hideki Matsuyama

Leonard: One of only two matches featuring major champions and a great showdown between strong ballstrikers, which means this will come down to who is better with the putter. Matsuyama has looked particularly sharp in winning twice in three matches.
Clifton: Love the experienced Matsuyama’s chances here. He looks ready to deliver for Ogilvy. Morikawa has putted really poorly and will need to rediscover his touch quickly to get something from this match.

Advantage: Matsuyama

• • •

Patrick Cantlay vs Adam Scott

Leonard: Cantlay finally got a win in his traditional foursomes pairing with Schauffele, so that might get him in the right frame of mind to take on the former Masters champion and run his unbeaten singles record to 4-0. Scott, meanwhile, is a meager 5-6-0 in singles. With a chance to finally win once in his 12 appearances, the Australian should be motivated in what could be his final go as a player.
Clifton: I don’t think I’ve seen Scotty swing it better (or faster!) than the way he has these past 12 months, and he will be primed to deliver a statement win here for his mate Ogilvy and end the drought. But Cantlay has this uncanny ability to stick around and test his opponent’s patience from tee to green. You’d just hate to play him in singles, as his record suggests. Wouldn’t surprise me if these two PGA Tour Policy Board Player Directors can’t be split after 18.

Advantage: Cantlay

• • •

Jackson Koivun vs Si Woo Kim

Jared C. Tilton

Leonard: This is a fun one, simply because it matches a four-time Presidents Cupper with the stoic Cup rookie in Koivun. The American seemed like a nervous wreck in a win with Justin Thomas on Thursday, but he settled down to outplay JT, making four birdies, on Saturday in their fourball tie. Si Woo (3-1-1) has probably been his team’s second-best player behind Sungjae Im, and he’s got the experience on this stage, with a singles record of 1-2.
Clifton: Koivun has been a great story and I get the fanfare, but I don’t think throwing him in this environment at the expense of a J.J. Spaun, for example, was the right call. Si Woo has been enormous, and you can chalk this up as one of the five points needed for a famous Internationals victory.

Advantage: Kim

• • •

Jacob Bridgeman vs Min Woo Lee

Leonard: We have to think that Bridgeman and Henley are motivated to show their own stuff after being paired twice in foursomes losses. Statistically, Bridgeman played far better than his partner, so he may not be too far off. And as the No.1-ranked putter on tour, he goes up against Lee, who has been the worst putter for his side. Lee tied Wyndham Clark two years ago in singles.
Clifton: Mark it down, folks – Min Woo Lee will COOK! We put him on our latest cover [below] for this very moment. Sit back and enjoy the show!

Advantage: Lee

• • •

Russell Henley vs Nick Taylor

Leonard: As a captain’s pick in his first Cup, Taylor has mostly been a bright spot with a 2-1 record – specifically because of his putting. He’s actually been bad from tee to green, losing nearly 6 strokes. Henley has been poor in that category, too, and has not display much in his strong suit – putting.
Clifton: Probably the least interesting match on paper but could be absolutely the centre of attention if Taylor, a notoriously great closer, can seal the deal and maybe even the cup!

Advantage: Toss up

• • •

Xander Schauffele vs Ryan Fox

Leonard: In a normally front-loaded lineup, Schauffele would figure to be near the top, but he’s struggled this week in being 1-2. Now, the thinking could also be that he’ll muster his majors game in the moment as the anchor. He’s got a formidable foe in Fox, who is 2-1 and brings spark to the Internationals with his presence alone. This could be a doozy of a match if the Cup goes down to the wire.
Clifton: Two years ago you’d have put your house on Schauffele spoiling the party but he’s been off, all while Foxy has been absolutely phenomenal. They better hope so, because the way things are going, it could be yet another weekend to forget for the Americans at Medinah. – Coleman Bentley

5.30am: Adam Scott has officially become the most capped player in Presidents Cup history. The popular Aussie reached the milestone at Medinah on Friday when, paired with South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout in the foursomes, he teed it up for the 56th time in the biennial contest, moving past American legend Phil Mickelson’s previous record of 55 matches.

It is another remarkable chapter in Scott’s Presidents Cup career, which began in 2003 and has now stretched across 12 editions of the event. At 46, he is also the most experienced player ever to represent the International team in the competition, and remains the Internationals’ all-time leading point scorer. – Brad Clifton

4:30am: The Internationals seem pretty loose heading into Day 2 of the Presidents Cup.

Geoff Ogilvy’s squad trailed after Thursday, but that didn’t seem to dampen the team’s spirits. Here’s what you said

A year ago, American golf fans did become the very definition of the word savages during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. They were “wild, untamed and brutally cruel” in going far beyond cheering for their side, instead yelling abusive things at the European players and wives. A first-tee announcer stepped down after leading a vulgar chant against Rory McIlroy and PGA of America President Don Rea Jr was ousted, in part, for downplaying the fans’ behaviour.

It was embarrassing and ugly and left a bad taste in the mouths of fans who love the tension and rewards of team competition but have no interest in rooting for a hockey fight to break out on the golf course.

That’s why this year’s Presidents Cup looked to be the palette cleanser the game needed. This particular match has always been more like watching your 8-year-old’s jujitsu class than an MMA fight. The Internationals have recorded just one victory, 28 years ago, and they just can’t muster the depth that the American squads possess.

They have enough going against them, and then Snedeker – always viewed as the aw-shucks Opie Taylor of the PGA Tour – goes for the throat on Day 1 by imploring the villagers to take to Medinah with torches.

Not really, of course, but it was just a very odd tone to set when team golf was supposed to return to some sense of civility.

The truth is that Snedeker’s plea fell mostly flat, with the loudest U-S-A! U-S-A! chants produced when a fleet of helicopters flew overhead. Everybody loves a good air show. And, truly, how can anybody get overly worked up when Carl Spackler himself, Chicago icon Bill Murray, brings out the huge and very gold Presidents Cup trophy?

[Actor Bill Murray “drinks” from the Presidents Cup at the opening ceremony. First, the crowd was sizeable – far more than two years ago at Royal Montreal – with the first hole nearly encircled with fans. As some tell it, they are pro golf-starved in Chicagoland, and beyond some LIV Golf events in the past few years, America’s third-largest city doesn’t get to see the stars very often. (The PGA Tour is looking to change that.)

Among the early groups, the gallery seemed to cheer like they do in any other PGA Tour event, with no nasty comments or yells during shots. Even the players’ wives were lightly guarded inside the ropes after someone threw a cup of beer at Rory McIlroy’s wife at Bethpage.

When the Internationals’ Ryo Hisatsune missed a short putt at the second to lose the hole, there were just a couple of obligatory groans.

“Be respectful of the players; be respectful of the game,” Harry said. “It’s like Tuesday night golf league – if somebody else makes an amazing putt, you give them a high five. We have kids and want them to grow up knowing that golf is a gentleman’s game. But as much as I want to see the USA win, I don’t want to make them feel like they never want to come back here again.”

Harry said he relishes team golf and that motivated him to attend a couple of LIV events. He knows the Ryder Cup has a much larger stature in the game but enjoys the Presidents Cup as something of a warm-up events for players who could become future US team stalwarts.

The talk of the Presidents Cup going away or being replaced has run rampant of late. Some observers believe PGA Tour CEO and commissioner Brian Rolapp is looking closely at an event whose results are so one-sided that it brings long-term viability into question.

Tens of thousands of fans at Medinah and more than a million watching on TV on the weekend might differ. For better or worse, not every team event needs to look and sound like the Ryder Cup, though an International win would certainly help.

So how about just enjoying the Presidents Cup for what it is and the savages can stay home. – TOD LEONARD

FULL GOLF DIGEST PRESIDENTS CUP COVERAGE HERE

5:30am: No, you technically can’t show your partner the line in matchplay.

On the eighth hole of Cameron Young and Xander Schauffele’s Four-ball match against Hideki Matsuyama and Ryo Hisatsune on Thursday, Young found himself in a situation we all find ourselves in during weekend team match play games with buddies. Young was pretty much out of the hole after hitting his approach in the water, but he took his drop anyway and chipped his fourth shot to four feet, setting up a bogey putt. His partner, Schauffele, meanwhile, missed the green with his second then chipped it up to eight feet, right on the same line as Young’s bogey putt.

After some deliberation and calling in a rules official, Hisatsune told Young to pick up his mark. Normally, in weekend games, your partner would ask you “show me the line.” That’s actually not allowed, as NBC rules analyst Mark Dusbabek pointed out right after. You are technically allowed to putt out even if the putt has been conceded, except if that putt is going to aid your partner. But that didn’t stop Justin Thomas.

Thomas opted for a Scotty Cameron Xperimental 10.5 at Medinah, a notable switch given the stakes and the format. Matchplay leaves little margin for a flat stroke, and a new flatstick is either a spark or a gamble.

The more interesting detail is in the hosel. From the looks of it, Thomas’ version sports a flow neck rather than the jet neck, a change that alters how the face rotates through the stroke and suits a slightly different putting motion.

Whether it’s a one-week experiment or something longer-term remains to be seen.
