American chip giant Nvidia has announced that its board of directors has authorised US$150 billion ($264b) in share buybacks, setting a new record.

Combined with previously authorised amounts, the company’s overall buyback programme now totals US$235b ($414b), which Nvidia expects to complete by the end of its fiscal year 2028

in January.

The announcement far surpasses Apple’s previous record of US$110b ($194b), authorised in 2024.

A stock buyback is when a company uses cash to buy back its own shares from investors, reducing the total number of shares outstanding, typically boosting the stock price.

Markets received the news positively. Nvidia is the world’s most valuable company at about US$5.6 trillion, a commanding lead over second-placed Apple at US$4.9t.

AFP 28 Sep, 2026 07:06 PMQuick Read Subscribe to listenAccess to Herald Premium articles require a Premium subscription.…

[20
302974,365,8239,696,363,364,302975,302973,8613,2372,247108,224591,3028,6948,13313,111,139,1042,69,1974,9833,2122,145,1361,200153
post-615068","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-artificial-intelligence","tag-264b","tag-ai","tag-american","tag-announced","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-artificialintelligence","tag-authorised","tag-authorises","tag-billion","tag-board","tag-buyback","tag-buybacks","tag-chip","tag-directors","tag-giant","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nvidia","tag-nz","tag-record","tag-setting","tag-share","tag-technology","tag-that","tag-us150
["GET
