It\u2019s safe to say the filmmaking approach to superhero movies has shifted somewhat since Alan Cumming last hopped across the big screen as Nightcrawler\/Kurt Wagner in the 2003 sequel X2: X-Men United.<\/a> And few can present this disparity more cogently\u2014and charmingly!\u2014than the Scottish actor himself, who, in an interview on The Morning Mash Up earlier this month<\/a>, cautiously relayed his latest X-perience returning to Fox\u2019s X-Men Universe just as it collides with the MCU in this winter\u2019s Avengers: Doomsday.<\/a> Speaking about the secrecy surrounding the Marvel Studios production (and how his tenure as emcee on The Traitors may have inured him to it), Cumming was frank about where he stood in terms of being in the know about the superhero movie\u2019s story. \u201cTo be honest, I don\u2019t fully understand the plot,\u201d he smiled, recounting a moment on set when his task was ostensibly to \u201crun around,\u201d which, as people are re-learning as Avengers: Endgame makes its latest theatrical rounds<\/a>, is crucial to the success of any bloated superhero movie.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThere was a bit when we were shooting a scene, and it was one of the rare scenes when I was actually on the backlot and not in front of a blue screen,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd this man came and said, \u2018So right now Alan, these giant robots are blah blah,\u2019 and started to tell me the thing, and I was like, \u2018You know what, thank you so much, but just tell me where I point my, whatever I point. And I\u2019ll do that. Really, I just know I\u2019m here to run around.’\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cumming could be talking about the Sentinels, those mutant-hunting robots from the X-Men series that appear in the Doomsday trailers and seem to be under the control of Robert Downey Jr.\u2019s Doctor Doom. In\u00a0 But in the slapdash hurly-burly that is Joe and Anthony Russo\u2019s improv-loving directorial approach<\/a>, the robots could be Ultron, a pack of H.E.R.B.I.E.s, or even Life Model Decoys of the Marvel Studios legal team lunging copies of Cumming\u2019 NDA at him, who can say? As for Nightcrawler\u2019s involvement in the plot of Doomsday, even Nightcrawler himself is in the dark<\/a>\u2014though he can tell us that he\u2019s worked with Florence Pugh on set, or at least, Pugh\u2019s body double. \u201cI saw Florence Pugh [at] the Emmys,\u201d Cumming told Morning Mash Up. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Gosh, it\u2019s so funny. I\u2019ve never met you, but you lay on top of me, or your body double did.\u2019 And she goes, \u2018Yeah, I lay on top of you as well, but it was your body double.’\u201d Sounds like one hell of a production over there.<\/p>\n

Avengers: Doomsday, which we hear is still being written, hits theaters on December 18.
