After a stint as head of graphic design at Plymouth College of Art, he returned to Manchester, where he wrote the instructional book Techniques of Typography (1969).

In 1970 Cal became head of graphic design at North Staffordshire Polytechnic, where he established one of the UK’s first multidisciplinary design courses. In 1981 he took the same role at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London and launched a postgraduate computer graphics course for professional designers. He later completed a master’s in applied linguistics at Lancaster University, which informed his 1991 book, Language and Typography.

Between 1986 and 1989 he was dean of art and design, and professor of typographic design, at Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University). His influential article Nellie Is Dead, published in Designer magazine in 1986, called for a revolution in the way that design was taught (its title referred to the “Sitting by Nellie” learning-on-the-job approach).

In 1989 Cal moved to Australia as professor of typographic design at what became the University of South Australia, in Adelaide. At Curtin University in Perth from 1996, as professor of design, he created an online master of design degree, one of the first professional courses of its kind. In the year before his retirement in 2001, he convened Reinventing Design Education, a major conference at Curtin that he called his “Swann song”.

Beyond design, Cal loved jazz and played the vibraphone and piano. He continued teaching online in retirement and published the autobiographical books Threads (2011) and The Book of Cal’s (2022). He became an honorary fellow of the International Society of Typographic Designers in 2017 and was inducted into the Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame in 2026.

He was an avid reader of the Guardian throughout his life, and in 2018 was featured in the Good to Meet You slot.

Cal and I first met when I was a master’s student at Curtin in 1998, and we married in 2009 after I returned for a PhD. He was three times divorced, and is survived by me, his four children – Kate, Karl and Jane, from his first marriage, and Luke, from the second – as well as two stepdaughters, seven grandchildren and a great-grandson.

My husband, Cal Swann, who has died aged 91, contributed to graphic design education in the UK and…

[31
442,498,499,500,501,156,111,139,69
post-615830","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-artsdesign","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz
["GET
