The United States remained the leading market at $155m, up 30%, while China rose 12% to $79m and Canada increased 55% to $18m. <\/p>\n
Fifth-quarter exports increased 13% to $156m. <\/p>\n
Meat Industry Association chief executive Nick Beeby said the result underlined the value the sector continues to generate for New Zealand. <\/p>\n
\u201cA 23% lift in export value is a strong result,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cExport volumes have also increased compared with August last year, but the more significant movement is in value, reflecting improved returns from international markets.\u201d <\/p>\n
While export values rose across all major markets and both sheepmeat and beef recorded gains in China, Beeby said it was important to keep the August result in perspective.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne month\u2019s data should be viewed in context, given the global volatility and cost-of-living pressures that may push some consumers towards lower-value proteins.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the August result built on the 2025\/26 financial year result (year ending June 30), when red meat and fifth-quarter exports were worth $13.1 billion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was 21% higher than in 2024\/25 and a record annual export value.\u201d <\/p>\n
Beeby said the red meat sector was a New Zealand success story in doing more with less. <\/p>\n
\u201cDespite a smaller livestock base, the sector has increased export revenue over time through higher global prices, strong demand for premium cuts and a sustained shift towards processed, chilled and frozen products. <\/p>\n
\u201cAround 97% of exported product is now high-value chilled or frozen cuts, supported by valuable co-products and a diversified global trading network.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said frozen carcasses now accounted for just 3% of trade. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis reflects the sector\u2019s focus on capturing more value from every animal and delivering products that meet the needs of customers around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
