{"id":61648,"date":"2025-10-06T04:54:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T04:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/61648\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T04:54:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T04:54:10","slug":"watch-christopher-luxon-defends-cuts-to-benefits-for-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/61648\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch: Christopher Luxon defends cuts to benefits for youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has defended tightening eligibility for jobseekers benefits for young people and encouraged them to do &#8220;whatever it takes&#8221; to get one.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/575040\/jobseeker-changes-punished-for-economic-crisis-they-didn-t-create\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced it would be tightening eligibility for Jobseeker benefits<\/a> for young people.<\/p>\n<p>From November 2026, there will be a parental assistance test for jobseekers and equivalent emergency benefits, with the government saying parents who can support their children should do so, instead of the state.<\/p>\n<p>Luxon said the government did not want to &#8220;send a message to young people&#8221; that they could &#8220;just drift into welfare and that&#8217;s it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4K04CKL_Image_28_jfif\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Prime Minister Christopher Luxon at a press conference in Auckland.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nPrime Minister Christopher Luxon.<br \/>\nPhoto: MARIKA KHABAZI \/ RNZ\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I make no apologies for it. If you want a job you go where the jobs are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said parents needed to get their children connected to work, training or education.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kids need to go to school&#8230; expect them to participate in work, training or education.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We care about you, we love ya, but don&#8217;t want to consign you to a life on welfare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He estimated about 4300 young people would be impacted by the changes.<\/p>\n<p>Luxon also told Morning Report on Monday he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/575072\/luxon-won-t-say-when-free-bowel-cancer-screening-age-will-drop-again\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">couldn&#8217;t commit to a date for when New Zealand matches Australia&#8217;s free screening age<\/a>, as was earlier promised.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Green Party has called on the government to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/575100\/greens-demand-return-of-new-zealanders-detained-in-israel-government-sanctions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ensure the safe return of three New Zealanders<\/a> aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla and to sanction Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Green Party co-leader Chl\u00f6e Swarbrick urged Luxon to intervene and ensure their safe return.<\/p>\n<p>Luxon reiterated the message to all New Zealanders was very clear &#8211; do not go to Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a war zone.
