Donald Trump<\/a>, in a development that could almost be from a Greek tragedy, appears to have invented something that is willing to do what no one in his orbit will: tell him the truth.<\/p>\n

The president launched America.gov<\/a> on Tuesday, an AI platform which the White House says will make it easier for Americans to interact with the federal government and eventually<\/a> complete services like renewing passports and enrolling in Medicare.<\/p>\n

At the heart of the website is a chatbot. You plug in questions. It gives you answers.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for Trump, America.gov \u2013 which, according to the executive order<\/a> he signed, is a place where Americans can \u201creceive accurate answers\u201d to all sorts of questions \u2013 is providing the kind of answers that he will not want to hear. It stands ready to debunk his false claims on all sorts of things, including election fraud, inflation and the impact of wind turbines on whales.<\/p>\n

I would really recommend testing it out, as I did on Tuesday. I started off by asking Trump\u2019s flagship product: Who won the 2020 election? Trump, famously and wrongly, argues that he did.<\/p>\n

America.gov does not have time for such claims. \u201cJoseph R Biden Jr won the 2020 US presidential election,\u201d the bot said, before listing the number of electoral college votes Biden won by.<\/p>\n

Next up I tried some of Trump\u2019s more recent claims. This week the president said<\/a> people were \u201ctwice as wealthy as [they] were a short time ago\u201d. Does America.gov agree?<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Federal Reserve data do not show American household wealth doubling since January 20, 2025,\u201d it said. \u201cThe Fed\u2019s Economic Well-Being of US Households in 2025 found 73% of adults \u2018doing okay\u2019 or \u2018living comfortably\u2019 \u2013 unchanged from recent years, not a doubling of typical household finances.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pretty definitive. What about Trump\u2019s (already debunked<\/a>) claim that the US experienced the \u201cworst inflation ever\u201d under Biden? Once again, America.gov disagreed with its creator.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Price Index data do not show that January 20, 2021\u2013January 20, 2025 was the worst inflation ever in US history.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are plenty more examples. Trump\u2019s bot denied his claim, made in a recent speech to the United Nations, that the US and Venezuela have 60% of the world\u2019s oil<\/a>. It said there was no widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, in contrast to Trump\u2019s repeated, untrue claims. The bot refuted Trump\u2019s assertion, made as he launched America.gov on Tuesday, that no president other than him had refused to take a government salary.<\/p>\n

It was also happy to weigh in on matters which might seem trivial, but are close to Trump\u2019s heart. The attendance at his 2017 inauguration, for example. At the time Trump\u2019s team said<\/a> he had drawn \u201cthe largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe\u201d.<\/p>\n

America.gov said: \u201cOfficial sources do not support that [2017] had the largest in-person crowd of any US inauguration \u2026 The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies lists Barack Obama\u2019s January 20, 2009 ceremony as having the largest attendance of any presidential inauguration in US history and the largest attendance of any event in Washington, DC history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, what about Trump\u2019s claim \u2013 made during one of his many rants<\/a> against wind power \u2013 that turbines<\/a> drive whales \u201cloco\u201d?<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d America.gov<\/a> said. \u201cUS federal science agencies do not find that wind turbines (\u2018windmills\u2019) drive whales \u2018loco\u2019.\u201d It added, just to be completely clear, that windmills are not \u201cdriving whales insane\u201d.<\/p>\n

So who do you believe? A president who, according to<\/a> the Washington Post, made 30,573 false or misleading claims in his first term? Or his AI platform, which draws upon 29,000 websites to formulate its answers?<\/p>\n
