Conducted at the operator’s laboratory in Rio de Janeiro – TIM Lab, the initiative explored advances that can transform connectivity through more stable, intelligent, and reliable networks, prepared to meet the growing number of connected devices and real-time applications.

Unlike previous generations, which had as their main focus increasing speed, Wi-Fi 8 is being developed with an emphasis on Ultra High Reliability. The proposal is to offer more consistent connections throughout the home, better coverage, less impact from interference, more efficient use of the spectrum, and reduced latency for applications such as videoconferencing, online gaming, streaming, and home automation. The tests demonstrated the potential of an integrated architecture that combines XGS-PON, Wi-Fi 8, and Artificial Intelligence for network operations and advanced digital security services.

The router that prepares the connected home for the future

The HGU (Home Gateway Unit) tested integrates Wi-Fi 8, XGSPON and Artificial Intelligence and is equipped with Qualcomm’s Dragonwing F8 or Dragonwing FiberPro A8 Elite, a platform designed to meet the demands of connected homes in the next decade.

In addition to compatibility with Wi‑Fi 7 and earlier versions, the solution incorporates advanced features that leverage the main benefits expected for Wi‑Fi 8:

Better use of the available spectrum; Greater residential coverage; Better performance in mesh networks (which use multiple access points to extend Wi‑Fi coverage in the home) Intelligent interference mitigation; Lower latency in critical applications; Higher energy efficiency for connected devices.

Together, these capabilities aim to provide a more uniform experience throughout the residence, reducing dead zones and improving performance even in environments with a high density of devices.

Innovation beyond standardization

In addition to the demonstration, advanced features based on the still-evolving IEEE 802.11bn specification were presented. Some of them received exclusive Qualcomm enhancements, identified by the “Pro” nomenclature.

An example is the DSO (Dynamic Subband Operation) feature, which enables more efficient use of the available radio resources. Qualcomm is developing an enhanced version, called DSO Pro, which expands the benefits of the standard implementation through algorithms and software optimizations.

The strategy allows operators and manufacturers to access not only the features currently under development for Wi‑Fi 8, but also differentiated capabilities that enhance network performance, coverage, and reliability.

Integrated protection for the whole family

Qualcomm also introduced the Security and Management (SAM) solution, which provides visibility into the home network and protection for connected devices. The platform combines simplified monitoring, access control, and advanced digital security features.

For TIM, the technology opens new opportunities for monetization through bundled digital services, in addition to strengthening the differentiation of the residential experience offered to customers.

“The demonstration is an important stage in learning and validating a technology that is still under development. Our focus is to understand, from now on, how reliability features, intelligent interference management, and AI can translate into more consistent home networks. This joint technical work helps us prepare the infrastructure and the customer experience for the future arrival of Wi‑Fi 8, without bringing a commercial offer forward,” says Daniel Bellas, Residential Marketing Director at TIM.

After the success of this demonstration, Qualcomm and TIM are evaluating the next steps for validating the technology in real-world environments. The goal is to analyze the performance of the new features in different residential scenarios and contribute to preparing the ecosystem for the future commercial arrival of Wi-Fi 8, expected in the coming years, after advances in standardization and the availability of compatible equipment.

“Wi-Fi 8 represents an important change in the evolution of wireless networks. More than just increasing speeds, it was developed to make connectivity more reliable, efficient, and intelligent,” says Diego Aguiar, Head of Sales at Qualcomm in Brazil. “Advanced spectrum usage features, interference mitigation, enhanced coverage, and artificial intelligence will enable more consistent experiences for users and new opportunities for operators and service providers.”

About Qualcomm

Qualcomm Incorporated encompasses our licensing business, QTL, and the vast majority of our patent portfolio.
