On Thursday, Guyon Epsiner sat down with Opportunity Party leader Qiulae Wong.

Quilae Wong can see both sides of the AI debate – while she says it can be damaging, it can be used for a lot of good that could benefit Aotearoa and drive productivity.

In an interview with Midday Report, Wong said we had learnt through history that technology could be used for good or bad.

She believed if the regulatory framework was right, AI could benefit New Zealanders while making sure the environment was protected along the way.

“But we have to be intentional about it,” Wong said.

Referencing the recent hacking of medical records in Australia, Wong said there was a cause for concern and a need to take a “risk-based mindset” to the use of AI.

“We need to up cybersecurity in New Zealand… and make sure all our agencies are equipped.

“We take it incredibly seriously but we don’t need to feel helpess about it all or hopeless.”

She said a clear framework was needed on what was an acceptable standard for AI.

“We can’t sit back and pretend we don’t have agency in this we do, even as a small country.

“We need to regulate and there are clear international standards and we should implement those here. The Government needs to take a leadership role on what does good use of AI look like.”

AI needed to be looked at by the Government as a tool for innovation and productivity, Wong said, not just a way to cut costs.

She said the main things her party was looking at were how to support AI to be used well, how to use it for good and how to capture as much of the value as possible for New Zealand.

There was a role for the Law Commission too, Wong said, to look at human rights in relation to AI and copyright and the human right to review work.

“It’s moving so fast and I think a sit back and watch approach is just not appropriate anymore.

“We need to be active participants in this, and not sit on the sidelines.”

Wong said the party also wanted to support businesses to roll it out by proposing a new tax credit for the adoption of technology like AI. The party had allocated $600m in its breakthrough policy for it, she said.

She also wanted there to be some rules around Government procurement of the technology to favour New Zealand suppliers.

In her day-to-day life Wong said she used AI for research and to draft things, but always reviewed it after.

“It does speed up the research process, but there is a lot of human oversight for us anyway – it’s not written by AI.”

Qiulae Wong’s vision for AI in New Zealand In the lead-up to November’s election, Midday Report is speaking…

[20
365,363,364,111,139,69,145
post-617048","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-artificial-intelligence","tag-ai","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-artificialintelligence","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-technology
["GET
