It’s so central for how we communicate and who we are. It’s also often thought of as related to aging and is not always seen as a disease.

There are a few important things that I hope can change this situation. First, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementing disorders are brain disorders with clear pathology. They’re not only part of normal aging, but this is really a brain disease. Second, there are ways to reduce the risk, and you can have a good quality of life even with the disease. It’s not the end of the world. Of course, it’s always challenging to get the diagnosis. Third, Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t only come later in life. The process starts at midlife, so I would like us to see the disease as starting at midlife. That may change attitudes about the disease as well.

What are some of the real-world impacts of that stigma?

Kivipelto: It often means delayed diagnosis. That’s a huge challenge because many medications have the biggest impact when you start them early. I’ve had patients who have first been diagnosed with depression, burnout, or many other things. So, they’ve been navigating the health care system for quite a long time. The right diagnosis can be important for medical reasons but also psychologically.

How can people challenge the stigma that persists?

Kivipelto: By increasing awareness. Both in terms of the general public but also health care providers. At Yale, one of our goals is to better educate primary care doctors about Alzheimer’s disease. We want to give them tools for how they can work with the diagnosis and with the interventions. So, education and awareness are really important.

We also need to have a more positive message. Disease is always disease, but sometimes people feel that Alzheimer’s disease is the worst diagnosis you can get. Nowadays, when you get the diagnosis much earlier, you can live many good quality years with the disease. You can always do something for a better quality of life.

How is the Center for Aging Well addressing stigma through its work?

Kivipelto: At the center, we’re trying to bridge the implementation gap. If we have research but it’s not implemented, it won’t reach the patient. It won’t change the society. So, we work very closely with the implementation research, with the FINGER model [the first randomized controlled study to show that lifestyle interventions, including diet, exercise, cognitive training, social stimulation, and vascular risk management, can improve brain health and prevent cognitive decline], with education, and with awareness. I hope these are some of the concrete things that we can scale up to other centers globally as well.

We’re also very involved with the participants and patients. We try to get them to co-design and co-develop our research. As a researcher, I have my own view, but I think we always should involve the participants and the patients to really know what the most important things to them are. That’s something very unique about what we are doing.

In a recent Q&A with Yale News, Kivipelto explained the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease, the harmful consequences of…

[34
134,527,111,139,69
post-618068","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-healthcare","tag-health","tag-healthcare","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz
["GET
