The woman died at the scene.

A homicide investigation into their deaths continues.

The man was charged with assault the next day and has been in custody since.

Ten members of the public were present for his court appearance, and two women were visibly upset.

The man’s lawyer, Gerard Walsh, asked Judge John Bergseng to release the man on electronically monitored bail.

Crown Solicitor Amanda Gordon, who appeared on behalf of police, said there were no grounds for police to oppose bail, given the charge he faced.

Judge Bergseng remanded the man to a property outside Rotorua and said he was to be electronically monitored with an ankle bracelet.

Among the bail conditions were that he was allowed to be away from the property to exercise on Mondays and Thursdays between 10am and midday.

The other conditions of his bail were not read in open court.

He is to reappear in the Rotorua District Court on January 21, when his name suppression is due to lapse.

Bay of Plenty Acting District Commander Inspector Logan Marsh previously said police were not seeking anyone else in connection to the case.
