Christopher Abbott has leveled up considerably in the superhero sphere since his appearance in Sony’s widely derided Spider-Man spin-off, Kraven The Hunter. He’s set to star in X-Men, Marvel Studios’ huge post-Secret Wars MCU entry, as Professor Charles Xavier, a dream and/or nightmare scenario that finds the actor taking on the role embodied by genre heavyweights Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy. Abbott’s doing just fine at the moment. In fact, he seemed pretty laid-back on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast on Thursday—comfortable enough, even, to confront the last time he appeared in a superhero-ish movie. Asked by Horowitz whether Abbott owes Kraven director and “good buddy” J.C. Chandor for his role in the film, or if Chandor owes Abbott, the actor smiled and rubbed his eyes. “He owes me big time,” he deadpanned. “I feel like I can safely… y’know, I can shit-talk myself. I didn’t know what I was doing in that thing.”

You’ll recall Abbott played The Foreigner, a Spider-Man foe created by Peter David and Rich Buckler in 1986, who’s hired by Alessandro Nivola’s The Rhino to whack Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven in the film. Or maybe you won’t, which is perfectly understandable; few people caught Kraven during its theatrical run, and besides, it’s not like Abbott holds his time as the villain in high regard. “I didn’t understand what the superpower was! I didn’t know what was going on,” he said. “I was like, ‘So I take off my glasses and what happens?’ And I feel like no one had a good answer.” The on-set confusion over the Foreigner’s superpowers is somewhat baffling, considering they were created whole cloth for the movie; the character as first presented in the comics had no superpowers, which set him apart from other Spider-Man enemies who need things like “special abilities” and “goblin gliders” to fight the Web-Head. (Still and all, this writer is struggling to remember the Foreigner’s powers in the movie, and rewatching Kraven is not an option, unfortunately. Deadlines, you understand.) At any rate, Abbott says he thinks of his experience on the film as a learning curve, and promises X-Men will be a better film than Kraven was. “I will guarantee you that,” he assured Horowitz.
