The lawyer said medics were \u201cworking to save Ms. Pike\u2019s life\u201d after she arrived with both arms \u201cswollen, burned, and blistered.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a separate filing with a federal appeals court, Pike\u2019s legal team wrote that when the execution had gone awry and they had asked a court to halt it, attorneys for the state argued that the department of corrections \u201chad no obligation to render life-saving care\u201d to Pike.<\/p>\n
Slemmer\u2019s mother, May Martinez, who also was in attendance, angrily told a local news outlet that the \u201cstate owes me a big apology\u201d and that it had failed her family.<\/p>\n
Martinez, who now lives in Florida and raised money to afford the trip to witness the execution, told WJXX television: \u201cAll I wanted was justice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Execution moratorium<\/p>\n
The Tennessee Department of Corrections said earlier this week that it \u201cfollowed every step of the state\u2019s lawful, established execution protocol.\u201d.<\/p>\n
But the state\u2019s Republican Governor, Bill Lee, who previously denied Pike clemency, halted further executions through the rest of the year while a review is conducted.<\/p>\n
Pike\u2019s was the second failed execution in Tennessee this year. The state halted the execution by lethal injection of Tony Carruthers in May after medical staff were unable to tap a vein.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter having endured solitary confinement for more than 20 years and a full attempt to kill her by lethal injection, Christa has endured punishment greater than any other person in the history of the American death penalty. The governor must commute Christa\u2019s sentence now,\u201d another lawyer for Pike, Randy Spivey, said earlier this week.<\/p>\n
Pike\u2019s lawyers had argued she should be granted clemency due to her young age and mental health issues at the time of Slemmer\u2019s killing. They also cited her history of childhood sexual assault and post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis event is the worst we\u2019ve seen and unlike any other botched execution in the modern era,\u201d Robin Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, told the New York Times.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n
US President Donald Trump questioned how an execution like Pike\u2019s could fail, telling reporters that it \u201cshouldn\u2019t be very difficult\u201d, while UN rights chief Volker Turk urged Tennessee not to make a new attempt to execute Pike.<\/p>\n
Had the drugs killed Pike, she would have been the first woman executed by the state in more than two centuries.<\/p>\n
In the United States, only 18 women have been executed since 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.<\/p>\n
