Whatever you think of their West End rock bluster and unabashed embrace of ornate pop, the classic rock veterans understood their songcraft formula down to its elemental essence, wielding complex yet hooky slices of peacocking cabaret, adapting to the ever-shifting musical trends.

1984 was much the same. Grasping the decade’s synths and drum machines, a stripped-down flair coated that year’s The Works while still honouring Queen’s taste for anthemic grandiosity. As ever, all four members offered an enduring piece to the plate when commencing album sessions at Los Angeles’ Record Plant studio. Bassist John Deacon had penned ‘I Want To Break Free’, ‘Tear It Up’ was the work of guitarist Brian May; Mercury had rustled up ‘It’s a Hard Life’, and drummer Roger Taylor was behind the punchy ‘Radio Ga Ga’.

Supposedly, the title came from his young son, pointing to the music playing in the car while in Los Angeles with the babbling “radio ca ca.” The expression stuck. Taylor then penned a nostalgic ode to the wireless in the MTV age, where he felt flashy promos were at risk of supplanting the joys of audio-only radio programming.

Such a threat was partly of Queen’s doing. Nearly a decade earlier, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ had pushed the nascent promo clip as a key feature of its marketing strategy, and The Works’ ‘I Want To Break Free’ saw heavy rotation on the day’s VJ outlets with its cross-dressing, Coronation Street pastiche music video.

Intended for a solo album, Taylor toyed with the ‘Radio Ga Ga’ sketch on a synthesiser and LinnDrum machine, before Queen made it their own with Deacon’s bassline and Mercury’s added harmonies and arrangements. From a solo number to then potential The Works album track, ‘Radio Ga Ga’ started looking like a Grade-A gem for the band.

“Sometimes I even take the whole song over, like with — and I don’t mind saying it — Roger’s ‘Radio Ga Ga’,” the frontman reflected, as published in 2006’s Freddie Mercury: A Life, in His Own Words. “I instantly felt that there was going to be something one could build into a really good, strong, and saleable commodity there. And so he went on a skiing holiday for a week, and I worked on it. But it’s basically his song. He had the ideas all together, and I just felt that there were some construction elements that were wrong.”

Further reading: From The Vault

Mercury had a habit of reworking tunes, occasionally to the irk of his bandmates. Famously, Mercury would slyly shift Taylor’s ‘A Kind of Magic’ demo toward a more pop-friendly number that the drummer was less than thrilled with two years later.

But for ‘Radio Ga Ga’, Mercury had Taylor’s blessing to polish his rough sketch into a less cynical, more optimistic anthem for the charts. Taylor’s letting go of his song baby paid off; ‘Radio Ga Ga’ peaked at number two on the UK singles chart and performed in every concert from then on, including their immortal Live Aid slot.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE The Far Out Classic Rock Newsletter

All the latest Classic Rock content from the independent voice of culture.
Straight to your inbox.

Credit: Far Out / Queen Productions Sun 4 October 2026 16:45, UK With mammoth egos in the band,…

[28
40549,21848,25615,156,8158,157,111,139,69,3366,36783,305439
post-620558","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1980s","tag-21848","tag-classic-rock","tag-entertainment","tag-freddie-mercury","tag-music","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-queen","tag-roger-taylor","tag-synth-pop
["GET
