Kilpatrick.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simbad.cds.unistra.fr\/simbad\/sim-id?Ident=NGC+6951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NGC 6951<\/a> is located around 70 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Cepheus.<\/p>\n<p>Also catalogued as NGC 6952, LEDA 65086, IRAS 20366+6555, and UGC 11604, the galaxy is about 75,000 light-years across.<\/p>\n<p>NGC 6951 was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_6951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">discovered<\/a> independently by the French astronomer Jerome Coggia in 1877 and the American astronomer Lewis Swift in 1878.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers classify it as a barred spiral galaxy, a Type II Seyfert galaxy, and a low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs this Hubble image shows, NGC 6951 is a spiral galaxy with plenty of intriguing structures,\u201d the Hubble astronomers said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost eye-catching are its spiral arms, which are dotted with brilliant red nebulae, bright blue stars and filamentary dust clouds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe spiral arms loop around the galactic center, which has a golden glow that comes from a population of older stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe center of the galaxy is also distinctly elongated, revealing the presence of a slowly rotating bar of stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the center of NGC 6951 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/hubble-barred-spiral-galaxy-ngc-6951-12344.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lies<\/a> a supermassive black hole surrounded by a so-called circumnuclear ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNGC 6951\u2019s bar may be responsible for another remarkable feature: a white-blue ring that encloses the very heart of the galaxy,\u201d the astronomers said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is called a circumnuclear starburst ring \u2014 essentially, a circle of enhanced star formation around the nucleus of a galaxy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bar funnels gas toward the center of the galaxy, where it collects in a ring about 3,800 light-years across.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo dark dust lanes that run parallel to the bar mark the points where gas from the bar enters the ring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dense gas of a circumnuclear starburst ring is the perfect environment to churn out an impressive number of stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using the Hubble data, astronomers identified more than 80 potential star clusters within NGC 6951\u2019s ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the stars formed less than 100 million years ago, but the ring itself is longer-lived, potentially having existed for 1-1.5 billion years,\u201d the researchers explained.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NASA has released a beautiful close-up shot of NGC 6951, a barred spiral galaxy captured by the NASA\/ESA&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":62188,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[43757,1022,5434,15110,50920,3323,111,139,50921,69,147,34083,43761],"class_list":{"0":"post-62187","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-science","8":"tag-barred-spiral-galaxy","9":"tag-esa","10":"tag-galaxy","11":"tag-hubble","12":"tag-liner","13":"tag-nasa","14":"tag-new-zealand","15":"tag-newzealand","16":"tag-ngc-6951","17":"tag-nz","18":"tag-science","19":"tag-spiral-galaxy","20":"tag-type-ii-seyfert-galaxy"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/62187","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=62187"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/62187\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/62188"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=62187"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=62187"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=62187"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
