Jonathan Van Ness rose to fame as the beauty and hair care expert on the multi-award-winning show Queer Eye<\/a>. Their eight-year tenure as one of the \u201cFab Five\u201d presenters ended when the show\u2019s final season aired in January 2026. A hairstylist by trade, they have their own cruelty-free, vegan haircare brand, JVN Hair.<\/p>\n

Beyond TV and beauty work, Van Ness has continued a career as a comedian, writer and podcast presenter. They have written five books, including the New York Times bestselling memoir Over the Top<\/a> and their latest young adult novel, which they wrote alongside Julie Murphy, Let Them Stare<\/a>. Van Ness continues to be an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, working on campaigns with The Trevor Project<\/a> and Planned Parenthood.<\/a><\/p>\n

The farmers\u2019 market. I live two blocks away from it in New York and go there all the time.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best present you\u2019ve given?<\/p>\n

This obnoxiously hard-to-find twilly [narrow silk scarf] also from Herm\u00e8s. The queen of my heart, my very best girl[friend], wanted one so bad that I went to 15 Herm\u00e8s stores in like 15 cities and finally got it; it was the best Christmas present ever.<\/p>\n

My mum made this stunning throw blanket with the nicest, thickest yarn, but I don\u2019t want to use it because I have five cats who would slice it with their claws. I begged her to make me a duplicate, but she made me the world\u2019s skinniest one \u2013 not as nice. I was like: \u201cMom, that\u2019s not as big and chic as the first one.\u201d She\u2019s like: \u201cUse the one I made you! I\u2019m not knitting you another!\u201d She\u2019s a really crafty, fierce artist.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite online store?<\/p>\n

EBay. I think resale is really interesting; I\u2019m particularly obsessed with bags. It\u2019s a little bit nerve-racking because who authenticated it? But I do like the prices, and I\u2019ve seen so many gorgeous pieces on there that do check out.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite bricks-and-mortar shop?<\/p>\n

In England, I\u2019ve got to say Space NK<\/a> \u2013 I love to buy Skin Rocks by Caroline Hirons products there, especially the eye cream.<\/p>\n

A house in Texas. I was in this era where I was like, \u201cI must have more space\u201d, but then it was way too much space \u2013 I bought at the top of the market, and then real estate in Austin tanked. It taught me that sometimes the price you pay for impulsivity is years later.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the thing(s) you get delivered?<\/p>\n

A grocery delivery service called Gopuff, for non-farmers\u2019 market staples like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, milk, and kitty litter.<\/p>\n

I am obsessed with Hanro. It\u2019s stupidly expensive, like $50 (about \u00a338) for a pair of underwear, but those bitches hold up. I think I\u2019ve had some of them for like five, six years, and they are very well made.<\/p>\n

JVN Hair notwithstanding, what I do like that\u2019s under \u00a320 is CeraVe body moisturiser. I suffer from psoriasis and, in a really bad flare, it is gentle, so nurturing and doesn\u2019t sting.<\/p>\n

Protein Pop-Tarts. I\u2019m so addicted to them, I can\u2019t keep a box in my house for more than two days. (Though it says \u201cprotein\u201d in huge letters, it\u2019s just 5g per tart \u2013 or 10g per suggested serving of two tarts \u2013 instead of the regular 2g).<\/p>\n

Bags. Being socialised as a boy growing up, purses were for girls, so my mum let me carry around one of her bags in secret when my dad wasn\u2019t around.<\/p>\n

Alongside Herm\u00e8s, I love bags by the Row, and also Ikea shopping bags. Do I quit my life and start a bag resale business, where I just find people\u2019s dream bags?<\/p>\n

Taxis: I ride my bike [instead], or use public transport. In London, I\u2019m up on that tube or on Lime bikes. I was spending so much money on taxis, I was like, girl, I don\u2019t need to do all that. I love to bike; I\u2019ll just get a helmet.<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s your greatest vintage find?<\/p>\n

My birthday present to myself this year. I found a black lizard Herm\u00e8s Kelly Sellier from 1987, the year I was born, which has its original hardware, at Sotheby\u2019s. It\u2019s [so pristine] I think someone bought it in \u201987, wore it twice, put it back in the box and thought: \u201cI don\u2019t like that thing.\u201d In order for me to convince my business manager that this is OK, I had to sell however many bags it takes \u2013 which was seven \u2013 so it was not coming out of my income. I told myself the famous lie when I\u2019m buying something too expensive: \u201cThis can be my everyday bag. I\u2019m just gonna beat it up, it\u2019s gonna be totally worth it.\u201d But then I get it home, and I\u2019m like: \u201cI could never!\u201d<\/p>\n
