{"id":622552,"date":"2026-10-06T19:22:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T19:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/622552\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T19:22:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T19:22:10","slug":"body-of-woman-who-leapt-into-river-to-avoid-police-found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/622552\/","title":{"rendered":"Body of woman who leapt into river to avoid police found"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A body found in the water near Moutohor\u0101 Island, north of Whakat\u0101ne, has been identified as a woman who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/10\/06\/search-ongoing-for-second-person-who-leapt-into-river-to-avoid-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">jumped into a river while fleeing police<\/a> near \u014cp\u014dtiki on Sunday. <\/p>\n<p>It comes after a driver ran a red light in the Wainui area at around 3.45am on Sunday and failed to stop when signalled to by police.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle came to a stop after road spikes were deployed about 10km from \u014cp\u014dtiki shortly after 4am.<\/p>\n<p>The car came to a stop down Snell Rd by the \u014ctara River mouth and Waioeka River mouth connection where a man and woman jumped into the water.<\/p>\n<p>Police earlier today said a 33-year-old man had been found at an address in Gisborne where he was arrested without incident. <\/p>\n<p>In an update this evening, police said a body had been found near Moutohor\u0101 Island, north of Whakat\u0101ne.<\/p>\n<p>Police were called to the area about 1.15pm after the body was found in the water by a member of the public.<\/p>\n<p>The body was formally identified as the 36-year-old woman who entered the \u014ctara River mouth and Waioeka River mouth on Sunday. Her death will be referred to the coroner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Police would like to thank our partner agencies, searchers, and the community for their efforts to return her to wh\u0101nau.
