For the first time since its premiere in 1989, A Few Good Men is returning to the Broadway stage. Playwright Aaron Sorkin worked with screenwriter William Goldman when it was adapted into the 1992 film from director Rob Reiner, and Sorkin is still tweaking it more than 30 years later. “One of the things I like about being a writer is that you can get better as you get older. It’s the opposite of an athlete,” Sorkin said at a press conference at the Vivian Beaumont Theater this morning. “So I asked them if I could do a polish. I asked them if we could treat this as a new play, not as a revival.” Director Michael Arden, who has won Tonys recently for his work on Parade and Maybe Happy Ending, welcomed that.

So what does this new, “polished” version of A Few Good Men actually look like? When we asked, Sorkin was careful to assure everyone that “it’s A Few Good Men.” Said Sorkin, “I haven’t changed the plot of it or the characters. It’s honestly just a dialogue polish. Some jokes that were clunkier are less clunky, that kind of thing.” Joked Arden, “it’s set in a 19th century pie shop.” (It’s not.)

It was Bradley Whitford, who played Daniel Kaffee on Broadway in 1990 and returns to the play now as Nathan Jessep, who had the most to say during the conference. “I probably shouldn’t say this in public, but I did have a nightmare where I woke up and the review said, ‘Quaker Theater Boy Fails To Convince As Marine,’” he quipped during his time. But Whitford had nothing but good things to say about Sorkin’s script and the “deep questions” it probes. “How are we going to make it work on this shrinking little planet? Is it gonna be through cooperation, through agreements, to obey the laws and use a legal system to arbitrate things that we disagree about, or is it about dominance and obliteration?” he wondered. “I think you can’t kill your way to a better future. And the play deals with that in a non-condescending way.”
