Quavo has rarely sounded less inspired, which I should\u2019ve expected when I saw the word-salad definition of QR\u00d6MELIFE he posted<\/a> to Twitter. \u201cIts a LIFESTYLE We all got chromosomes,\u201d he wrote. \u201cYou spend most of your life looking for what made u special not knowing u got it in you take a look at yourself nd realize when go thru challenges U are protected in this outter of layer of QR\u00d6ME.\u201d I\u2019m not sure of the connection between that statement and the album itself, where he can hardly scrape together any memorable lines or flows. It\u2019s such a nothingburger that it\u2019s hard to even rag on the lobotomized take on a Mr. Collipark<\/a>-style twerk jam on \u201cTrance (Walk It Down)\u201d or the wannabe TikTok GRWM video trend \u201cThick in the Mirror.\u201d The lone standout \u201cHit-A-Lik\u201d captures the funk the rest of the album doesn\u2019t in Pharrell\u2019s flickering bassline, which almost reminds me of Erick Sermon<\/a>\u2019s Shaft flip on Jigga<\/a>\u2019s \u201cReservoir Dogs<\/a>.\u201d Quavo, for a moment, is boogying like that generation of \u201980s MCs who grew up on James Brown<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The famous colleagues who\u2019ve shown up for the open bar and Louis gift bags don\u2019t add much. Lil Baby<\/a>\u2019s melodies are on autopilot for \u201cBall My Love,\u201d a by-the-numbers tricking ballad where an Auto-Tuned Quavo almost impressively can\u2019t come up with a single notable detail about his girl. Everyone on \u201cBaby Breath\u201d was a lot better at rapping a decade ago, but I don\u2019t mind\u2014it\u2019s like watching Ice Cube<\/a>\u2019s BIG3 basketball league on a hungover Sunday afternoon. P\u2019s Baby Keem<\/a> impression isn\u2019t half bad. Tyler<\/a> is having a little fun stretching his ad-libs like TisaKorean<\/a>. A$AP Rocky<\/a> is there. The Justin Timberlake<\/a>-featuring \u201cHouse Music\u201d is a dumpster fire\u2014the kind of private-equity house music that makes Honestly, Nevermind<\/a> sound like Frankie Knuckles<\/a>. \u201cMusic you buy houses with,\u201d sings Quavo, breaking the fourth wall by revealing that they\u2019re all here to fund their backyard tennis court renovations.<\/p>\n

\u201cAway\u201d with Offset<\/a> makes me wish I wasn\u2019t shitting on QR\u00d6MELIFE. There\u2019s not anything particularly great about the song, other than that Quavo and Offset still bounce off each other well, even if they\u2019re more like business acquaintances these days. It\u2019s impossible to hear Quavo say, \u201cI\u2019m still a Migo\u201d without thinking about Takeoff<\/a>, and how important the Migos were to the last decade and a half of popular rap music. It\u2019s probably the only song on the album that leaves me thinking more about Quavo than Pharrell\u2014like there\u2019s an alternate universe inside of this song where QR\u00d6MELIFE is about Quavo\u2019s mid-career pivot into a new-age Raheem the Dream<\/a>, instead of a Pharrell business expense. Well, it\u2019s not.
