It is likely the remnant of an old <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/science\/science-behind-the-discoveries\/hubble-stellar-explosions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supernova explosion<\/a>: separate historical records by Chinese, Japanese and Arabic astronomers tell of a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guest_star_(astronomy)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">guest star<\/a>&#8221; that appeared in the sky for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/stunning-echo-of-800-year-old-explosion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">185 days<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SN_1181\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">year 1181<\/a>. It is believed that this bright new point of light came from the supernova that caused the fireworks in Pa 30. Astronomers <a href=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1598398386929-4d5370672e9f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">don&#8217;t know exactly<\/a> what happened in this unusual explosion, classified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Type_Iax_supernova\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Type Iax<\/a> supernova, but it is thought to be caused by the merger of two <a href=\"https:\/\/imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov\/science\/objects\/dwarfs1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">white dwarfs<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/1538-4357\/acb138\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mysterious central star<\/a> in the image is extremely hot and produces a strong wind, possibly forming the <a href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/news\/noirlab2624\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">radial filaments<\/a>. Look closely at them: those <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/1538-4357\/ae9cb2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pearl-like knots<\/a> stringing the filaments are 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/voyager\/voyager-1\/voyager-1-what-is-a-light-day\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">light-days<\/a> in diameter.
