But Rogers said coping with heat was only part of the test.

They also had to produce yields at least as good as existing varieties, keep their quality and sell for enough to make them worthwhile for growers.

“The climate resilience really is a grower-based benefit. But what we’re doing at the same time is making sure the fruit can compete with those super-premium and premium varieties around the world, and that consumers still really enjoy the fruit at that price point,” Rogers said.

VentureFruit has tested the apples’ taste, appearance and texture with consumers in Europe and Asia.

About 120 hectares have already been licensed in Catalonia through FruitFutur. Rogers said HOT03A1 was expected to reach European consumers over the next few years, while planting material was being tested for possible releases elsewhere.

The apples were also being trialled in New Zealand. However, the trees were still young and Rogers said it would be several years before there were meaningful local results.

Growers and marketers would need licences to use the ADORE name and plant its varieties, rather than being able to grow them freely.

T&G said the global premium apple market was expected to grow from US$13 billion in 2025 to US$19 billion by 2030 – average annual growth of 7.6 percent.

The Hot Climate Partnership began in 2002 and brings together Catalonia’s Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology, New Zealand’s Bioeconomy Science Institute, Catalonian grower group FruitFutur and VentureFruit.

ADORE follows the September consumer launch in Vietnam of JOLI, a large, full-flavoured apple bred in New Zealand and commercialised globally by VentureFruit.

There are 273 hectares of JOLI licensed in New Zealand.

A family of apples bred to cope with hotter growing conditions has been launched by VentureFruit, T&G Global’s…

[5
138,111,139,69
post-623431","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-business","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz
["GET
