Sixteen years after saying goodbye, one of Australia\u2019s most loved rock bands could be preparing to make a spectacular return.<\/p>\n

Powderfinger have sent fans into a frenzy after mysterious billboards began appearing across the country, featuring seemingly random numbers, letters and cryptic messages. Now, a new email sent directly to fans has offered the strongest hint yet that something big is coming.<\/p>\n

The email, titled \u201cThe Return of the Electric Horsemen\u201d, arrived on Thursday, October 8, following days of speculation about whether the Brisbane five-piece could be reuniting for a tour, new music or something else entirely.<\/p>\n

It begins with three intriguing words: \u201cTime keeps the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n

The message goes on to catalogue the band\u2019s history, from rehearsals, flights and soundchecks to albums, accolades and audiences, before finishing with one particularly telling line.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything else is a variable. Add enough time to enough variables and something extraordinary happens\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

It is an unusual message, but one that appears to connect directly with the mysterious advertising campaign that has been unfolding across Australia.<\/p>\n

Digital billboards and projections have been spotted in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, featuring strings of numbers that fans have been trying to decipher.<\/p>\n

Among the clues are \u201cALBUMS: 7\u201d, \u201cMEMBERS: 5\u201d and references to the band\u2019s 18 ARIA Awards, all matching Powderfinger\u2019s history. Another number, 13.11.2010, points to November 13, 2010, the date of the group\u2019s final farewell performance at Brisbane\u2019s Riverstage.<\/p>\n

The campaign has also introduced a mysterious Instagram account, @thereturnoftheelectrichorsemen, whose name references \u201c(Return of) the Electric Horseman\u201d, the closing track from Powderfinger\u2019s breakthrough 1996 album Double Allergic.<\/p>\n

That album celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, adding another possible explanation for the timing.<\/p>\n

The account has shared the line \u201cI see your signs on the street now. Do you?\u201d, a playful reference to lyrics from the band\u2019s hit \u201cMy Happiness\u201d. Its five horse emojis have also been interpreted as representing Bernard Fanning, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, John Collins and Jon Coghill.<\/p>\n

Other billboard clues include \u201cTOP: 06\u201d and \u201cTOP: 08\u201d, believed to reference the band\u2019s appearances in triple j\u2019s Hottest 100, including \u201cPick You Up\u201d and \u201cThe Day You Come\u201d.<\/p>\n

But perhaps the most significant clue is who appears to be behind it.<\/p>\n

Reports have linked concert promoter Live Nation to the billboard campaign, raising hopes that this is building towards a live reunion rather than simply an anniversary re-release.<\/p>\n

While no concert dates or venues have been confirmed, the involvement of a major touring company makes the prospect of Powderfinger returning to the stage particularly intriguing.<\/p>\n

For Adelaide fans, a reunion would bring back memories of one of the city\u2019s great live music farewells.<\/p>\n

On October 30, 2010, Powderfinger performed at Memorial Drive as part of their Sunsets Farewell Tour, with thousands of fans gathering to hear songs including \u201cMy Happiness\u201d, \u201cThese Days\u201d, \u201cSunsets\u201d and \u201cPick You Up\u201d.<\/p>\n

The concert remains part of the venue\u2019s history, with WE ARE SA<\/a> later reflecting on Powderfinger\u2019s emotional farewell as one of Memorial Drive\u2019s memorable performances.<\/p>\n

Adelaide was also a stop on the band\u2019s 2007 Across the Great Divide tour with Silverchair, a pairing that remains a significant moment in Australian live music.<\/p>\n

In a particularly timely coincidence, Adelaide tribute acts Powdervulture and I Can\u2019t Believe It\u2019s Not Silverchair are joining forces at The Gov this Friday, October 9<\/a>, to celebrate that very tour.<\/p>\n

Powderfinger officially disbanded in 2010 after more than two decades together, although the musicians have occasionally reunited, including their 2020 One Night Lonely online performance, which raised more than $500,000 for Support Act and Beyond Blue.<\/p>\n

Whether the latest campaign is teasing a national reunion tour, anniversary celebrations or even new music remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

A new album is certainly possible, although the emphasis on kilometres travelled, soundchecks, stages and encores, combined with Live Nation\u2019s reported involvement, points more strongly towards a live performance announcement.<\/p>\n

And with the email now landing directly in fans\u2019 inboxes, an official reveal could be very close.<\/p>\n

For anyone who stood among the crowd at Memorial Drive in 2010 believing it was their last chance to see Powderfinger, the prospect of doing it all again is an exciting one.<\/p>\n

Could Adelaide be in line for another night with one of Australia\u2019s greatest bands?<\/p>\n

For now, the Electric Horsemen are keeping everyone guessing.<\/p>\n
