The following post contains spoilers for the “Chicago Med” Season 12 premiere.<\/p>\n
Somebody at\u00a0Gaffney Chicago Medical Center did commit a\u00a0HIPAA violation. It’s just not the somebody you might have expected.<\/p>\n
NBC’s “Chicago Med” returned for its 12th season on Wednesday night, after leaving us to wonder all summer<\/a> if perhaps\u00a0Sharon Goodwin really did leak the medical files of potential Gaffney hire\u00a0Theo Rabari in an effort to save Dr. Charles’ job. In fact, most of Wednesday’s premiere had us wondering longer still about Goodwin’s involvement… only to reveal that Nurse Doris (Lorena Diaz) is apparently responsible for the leak, as she confessed on Goodwin’s doorstep in the episode’s closing minute.<\/p>\n “It was one of the options on the table when I wrote the finale last year,” showrunner Allen MacDonald tells TVLine of the decision to make Doris the culprit. “When we came back into the writers’ room for Season 12, [the leak] was one of the first things we talked about, if not the first, and we decided that [Doris] would be the best course of action. It has a twist in it, it goes against expectations. We didn’t want it to be as simple as: Goodwin did it.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n Why did Doris confess now?<\/p>\n
NBC<\/p>\n Earlier in the season premiere, the Gaffney doctors and nurses treated victims of a mass shooting at a local wedding, stretching an already-strained hospital even thinner in the wake of Goodwin’s voluntary leave amid the HIPAA crisis. Her replacement as executive director is Mallory Sloan (Rebecca Breeds, “The Originals”), who isn’t getting the warmest reception at Gaffney due to recent budget cuts and staff burnout.<\/p>\n All of this, Allen MacDonald says, is what leads Doris to Goodwin’s door at the end of the episode, following a harrowing shift that ended with a moment of silence for the day’s shooting victims.<\/p>\n “One way or another, Doris carries a certain amount of guilt,” the showrunner shares. “And during the course of the season premiere, Goodwin’s not actually working at the hospital. She willingly took leave, but she’s not the executive director anymore, and the hospital is not running the way that it used to. I don’t want to be dramatic, but there’s some borderline malevolent forces at work here, at least as far as [Gaffney board member] Miranda being completely left unchecked.”<\/p>\n MacDonald continues:\u00a0“If you’re Doris, and you have some idea of what really went down, there’s a certain guilt you carry with that, and that escalates as the hour continues. The moment of silence is a turning point for Doris where she feels like, one way or the other, she needs to say something.”<\/p>\n But even if Goodwin isn’t responsible for the HIPAA violation that shut out Dr. Rabari from a job at Gaffney, you might feel skeptical that this scandal will end with Doris’ confession \u2014 and that’s exactly how MacDonald wants you to feel.<\/p>\n “I would always have some wariness moving forward, and I would not take anything you see in the premiere at complete face value,” he teases with a laugh.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n Surprise! Lenox is here!<\/p>\n
NBC<\/p>\n In other season-premiere shockers,\u00a0Sarah Ramos made a surprise appearance as\u00a0Dr. Caitlin Lenox, who viewers didn’t expect to see for the first five episodes of Season 12<\/a> while new mom Ramos is out on maternity leave<\/a>. Instead, Lenox popped up for a video call with Ripley (Luke Mitchell) at the end of the hour, and we learned that Lenox is currently away in Zurich for a\u00a0prion disease drug trial.<\/p>\n “I always love to surprise the audience with appearances of characters. This was planned all along,” Allen MacDonald reveals. “We knew that Sarah was going to go on maternity leave and that she’d be gone for a number of episodes, but I really wanted the audience to see that she’s still in the world, and surprise them with an appearance to help them get through the next four episodes that she’s not in.”<\/p>\n Logistics for Ramos’ premiere scene weren’t difficult, either, per MacDonald. Since it had long been the plan for Ramos to show up in Wednesday’s season opener, “we shot her scene for Episode 1 when she came back for Episode 6, which is the episode when she’ll come back full-time,” he says.<\/p>\n The EP adds that Lenox and Ripley have a “real, open connection” to start this season, not least because Ripley narrowly avoided getting hit by a car that drove straight into the Gaffney waiting room in the premiere \u2014 a car driven by the wedding shooter, who struck and killed a new friend of Ripley’s with his vehicle when he plowed through the hospital’s doors.<\/p>\n “It’s a wake-up call for Ripley,” MacDonald adds. “If\u00a0he had been standing where he was standing with Bruno a few seconds longer, he could be dead now, too, and [Lenox] could live another 15 or 20 years.
