And choosing what to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner can be daunting without a plan.

Fortunately, many have shared their routines, in the hopes they can aid those not in the know. The overall message is usually to eat a variety of healthy foods that benefit a person’s unique body.

“If I could put 40 years or research into one answer, it would be to eat a variety of healthy, mostly plant-based foods, and find a way to do it that’s enjoyable,” Walter Willett, one of the world’s most-cited nutritionists and a professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told The Washington Post on Thursday.

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.newsbeep.com/nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/GettyImages-1252246593.jpeg" loading="lazy" alt="A well-balanced diet is the main recommendation from nutritionists - but what does that actually look like to them? It’s usually different for everyone (Getty Images)

What’s for breakfast?

Willett says his daily breakfast almost always includes fresh blueberries and a small glass of orange juice.

That’s because berries are a superfood rich in vitamins and antioxidants, protecting against degenerative brain disorders including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

The orange juice, while sugary, also has brain benefits.

Kelly Johnson, a registered dietitian at the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center in Houston, Texas, says she eats plain yogurt, a pear, almonds and honey for breakfast.

Honey has inflammation-reducing antioxidants, the yogurt has protein and gut-regulating bacteria and the pear has beneficial fiber.

Oatmeal with fruit can provide similar benefits for the gut, which has been shown to help the brain, too.

What about lunch?

There are a few similarities in lunches reported by dietitians.

One is a big protein component, whether that’s chicken, fish or tofu.

“As I get older, I’m more mindful of supporting my muscle health, so I try to eat protein regularly and keep strength work in my routine,” Bini Sureshbabu, a Cleveland Clinic London dietitian, told The Independent.

Another is a good, carbohydrate-rich vegetable, mixed into a big salad or served on the side.

“I consume higher calorie, starchy carbohydrates early in the day and consume lower calorie, high fiber vegetables for dinner to limit calories before bed,” Jeff Cervero, a registered dietitian and lead nutrition coach at Florida’s St. Petersburg Nutrition, explained in a statement.

That ensures people are fuller later in the day without packing on calories that could contribute to weight gain.

Most healthy lunches and dinners feature a protein source and some fibrous vegetables (Getty Images)

Dinner time!

It’s the end of the day and Johnson says she’s making a chicken stir fry with vegetables.

But her plates and portions are smaller than breakfast and lunch, so she’s less likely to overeat.

A chicken salad is also a good option, according to a TODAY piece written by registered dietitian Samantha Cassetty.

“I always make one main-dish protein, a starchy-carb side dish, and one or two types of roasted veggies. From there, I mix and match portions for me and my 15-year-old son since we have very different needs,” she explained.

And dessert?

Dessert doesn’t have to be fruit. A couple of squares of dark chocolate do the trick for Cassetty.

Dark chocolate has antioxidants, too.

However, treating yourself and others to a decadent galette or ice cream won’t hurt if done sporadically – and you don’t eat a ton.

“To me, dessert is more enjoyable when it’s shared with others,” registered dietitian Jessica Ball wrote in a piece in EatingWell.

Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later?
