One of Ford\u2019s biggest secrets has been unveiled, with a one-off Mustang Ute concept going on display at its Heritage Fleet display in the US.<\/p>\n

Announced by Ford Heritage Fleet Manager Matt Korczyk, the Mustang Ute was built by Ford\u2019s Experimental Vehicle Building (EVB) team in Dearborn, Michigan, appearing to be based on the previous-generation S550 coupe.<\/p>\n

Like the Ford Falcon ute which was sold in Australia for 55 years, it\u2019s underpinned by a monocoque chassis, rather than the body-on-frame design of the utes which now dominate the local market, such as the Ranger.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis concept was built by the team in the Ford EVB Metal Shop, as a way to train apprentices by allowing them to get real world, hands-on experience by way of building a concept car,\u201d Korczyk said in a social media post on Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe team took a normal Mustang, and turned it into a hand-crafted, one-off concept \u2018Ute.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHundreds of hours went into this build, and it serves as a great reminder of how skilled trades of all kinds are integral to the Company. It also showcases the raw talent and skill of not only the apprentices who honed their craft on this vehicle, but also the talent of those who helped teach them.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil now, this concept has never been shown outside of the walls of Ford EVB (Experimental Vehicles Building)!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sadly, there\u2019s little to no chance we\u2019ll ever see a Ford Mustang ute in showrooms, however that doesn\u2019t mean that the brand isn\u2019t willing to branch out from its pony car\u2019s two-door roots.<\/p>\n

Ford has strongly hinted \u2013 and shown to dealers \u2013 that it\u2019ll build a Mustang-based sedan in the near future, with a report by Automotive News<\/a> in August last year saying it launch as soon as early 2028, at least in the US.<\/p>\n

Ford Mustang sedan one step closer<\/p>\n

The prospect of Ford returning to the sedan market with a Mustang-badged model appears to almost be a certainty.<\/p>\n

A Mustang sedan was reportedly previewed to North American dealers last year, and prior to this Ford CEO Jim Farley told media outlets it could launch a four-door version of the pony car, as long as it has \u201call the performance and attitude of the original.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fuel was added to the fire of speculation when, speaking to Automotive News<\/a> at the Detroit motor show, Farley refused to rule out a return to the sedan segment, saying \u201cnever say never\u201d, before adding a caveat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sedan market is very vibrant. It\u2019s not that there isn\u2019t a market there. It\u2019s just we couldn\u2019t find a way to compete and be profitable. Well, we may find a way to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sedan could potentially adopt the Mach 4 nameplate – similar to the previous Mustang Mach 1 performance flagship, as well as the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. Earlier this year the Mach 4 nameplate was trademarked in the US and Australia.<\/p>\n
