<\/p>\n\n With South Korea preparing to send a lander to the moon by 2030, researchers are developing a rover with innovative origami-inspired wheels, which they hope will join the mission.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThe wheels are made from multiple flexible strips that interweave,\u201d PhD candidate Seong-bin Lee, of the Aerospace Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory (ARML) at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), told CNN.\n <\/p>\n
\n He said he wanted to mimic the structure of a Da Vinci bridge, a self-supporting structure held together by gravity, geometry and friction. Combined with the foldability of origami, the result is a deployable, airless rover wheel.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThe key point of origami is the feature of shape-changing ability,\u201d Lee added. He and his team, in collaboration with the Unmanned Exploration Laboratory (UEL), a private space robotics company, have spent three years on the project, creating a wheel that can shrink to 9 inches in diameter, fit inside a lunar lander and expand to more than double that size once it reaches the moon.\n <\/p>\n
\n Dae-Young Lee, associate professor and director of the ARML at KAIST, supervised the project. He explained that conventional shape-changing mechanisms usually require more volume, mass, and complexity, and are less reliable \u2014 none of which is ideal for a rover in space. The origami system, he said, removes that complexity while achieving deployability.\n <\/p>\n

\n The wheels are made from a fire-resistant high-carbon steel that allows them to bend and flex more easily than conventional ones. This technology could help the rover explore the moon\u2019s challenging surface while resisting its extreme temperature swings of more than 500\u00b0 Fahrenheit.\n <\/p>\n
\n It\u2019s hoped a rover with these origami-inspired wheels will explore the moon\u2019s lava tubes, a system of underground tunnels formed by ancient volcanic activity. The tubes could one day shelter human colonies from cosmic radiation and extreme temperatures but are difficult to access due to steep slopes and drop-offs.\n <\/p>\n
\n The wheels have been tested in the caves and lava tubes of Jeju Island, South Korea. The team has also tested a smaller prototype in the lab in various environments, including lunar regolith (the moon\u2019s dusty surface layer), extreme temperatures and mud.\n <\/p>\n
\n The next step is to build a rover that can think for itself. That work is being led by Yiseub Yun, who is working on his master\u2019s degree at KAIST. He is using artificial intelligence to optimize the rover\u2019s design and teach it how to move, drawing on reinforcement learning techniques \u2014 where AI learns through trial and error.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cI think that adaptiveness of AI can help space exploration,\u201d Yun said. His goal is to build a framework that can identify the optimal shape for a robot, and the ideal number of wheels, so it can more easily navigate the obstacles of the lunar landscape.\n <\/p>\n
\n Korea is becoming increasingly ambitious about space. In its 2027 budget plan, Seoul is seeking a record 1.65 trillion won (approximately $1.2 billion) for space development, a 47% increase over 2026. The effort is managed by the Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA), established in 2024, which has set a goal of turning the country into one of the world\u2019s top five aerospace powers.\n <\/p>\n
\n The rover-wheel initiative is one of several projects at KAIST receiving funding from KASA, and it\u2019s motivating students to push boundaries.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cSince I was young, I got big inspiration from people that challenge themselves,\u201d Seong-bin Lee said. \u201cI admired those who challenge themselves, even despite knowing that it\u2019s going to be a tough path.
