Five towering mushroom-like sculptures reaching heights of up to 40 ft. are now being officially celebrated as permanent public art installations in the public park on the rooftop of Vancouver\u2019s new Oakridge Park shopping mall<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The public art installation, formally called \u201cBush Capsules,\u201d was recently fully completed, several months after the mall and the first finished section of the major rooftop park<\/a> opened in late May 2026. The sculptures \u2014 which were installed in time for the mall\u2019s opening day \u2014 are situated just beyond the vast outdoor patio for the Time Out Market food hall.<\/p>\n

In particular, the full completion milestone marks the very recent addition of the installation\u2019s programmable LED lighting system, with this built-in lighting illuminating the sculptures and surrounding landscaping from dusk to dawn.<\/p>\n

These sculptures \u2014 by B.C. artist Brian Jungen \u2014 form a cluster of rounded canopies, with shapes inspired by old plastic chairs. The design reflects Jungen\u2019s broader approach of turning familiar, everyday objects into unexpected works of art. He is known for reworking objects such as furniture, clothing, and sports equipment into sculptures that explore Indigenous and popular cultures.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnowing that Vancouver is still on the edge of sublime wilderness and that mushrooms can grow through pavement is reassuring to me,\u201d said Jungen.<\/p>\n

Bush Capsules is one of four major public art installations at Oakridge Park, with three other works yet to be officially unveiled.<\/p>\n

Beneath the central skylight, Haegue Yang\u2019s \u201cOpalescent Cumulus Swirl\u201d will feature 226 opalescent Venetian blinds, using daylight and internal nighttime lighting to create changing colours and shadows.<\/p>\n

Inside Time Out Market, Howie Tsui\u2019s \u201cGlyphs of the Epicure\u201d will depict surreal portraits assembled from images of ingredients and cooking tools, exploring how migration and cultural exchange shape food traditions.<\/p>\n

At the Transit Plaza, Diamond Point\u2019s mosaic \u201cFirst Ancestors\u201d will honour the Musqueam First Nation, with imagery including ancestors wrapped in clouds and Salish design elements, referencing a site once abundant with trees, streams, and marshes. This mosaic is being installed onto the exterior wall of the new entrance building for SkyTrain\u2019s Oakridge-41st Avenue Station<\/a> that frames the plaza.<\/p>\n

The entire station upgrade and expansion project<\/a> \u2014 including a second station entrance via an underground mall corridor<\/a> \u2014 will reach full completion in early 2027<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following the opening of the 50,000+ sq. ft. flagship Safeway grocery store in August 2026<\/a>, Oakridge Park\u2019s next big tenant opening was the 70,000 sq. ft. Fairleigh Dickinson University campus<\/a>, which opened last month, just in time for the start of the new school year. The campus will host its official grand opening celebration on Oct. 15.<\/p>\n
