Lizzo said joint and back pain made performing physically uncomfortable as her weight increased<\/p>\n

The singer began her intentional fitness journey in 2023 and was surprised some saw it as hurting her brand<\/p>\n

She says her brand is joy, and supportive fan messages outweigh online criticism<\/p>\n

Lizzo<\/a> is looking back on her health journey<\/a>, which she started when she began to get “physically uncomfortable.”<\/p>\n

“I think that I was extremely healthy at my highest weight,” the singer, 38, said on the Wednesday, Oct. 7 episode of The Jason Lee Show.<\/a> “My blood was extremely healthy. I think what happened was it was physically uncomfortable in some areas.” She shared that her fitness journey was triggered by “joint pain,” explaining “being able to do my job, that changed ’cause I was getting heavier and my back was hurting.”<\/p>\n

The “Truth Hurts<\/a>” singer said on the BET show that she was taken aback by the reaction to what she’s dubbed her “intentional weight release<\/a> journey,” which she began in 2023. “I was really surprised when people said that me looking smaller, releasing weight, was f—ing up my brand.”<\/p>\n

Lizzo, whose birth name is Melissa Jefferson, shared that she questioned, “Is my brand being fat?”<\/p>\n

“I had to sit back and maybe a lot of people thought that my brand was being fat, but one thing I had to realize is my brand is joy,” she said. “I didn’t realize that on my own.”<\/p>\n

“When I was bigger and joyful, all they saw was fat,” the newly minted children’s book<\/a> author explained. “That’s all people going to see is fat. But that joy was the thing that arrested you. Joy was the thing that got your attention. Joy was the thing that made you want to tune in and see what the f— I was on.”<\/p>\n

“So, I can be joyful no matter what size my body is. But when I started releasing that weight, I wasn’t completely joyful,” she said, going on to reference the harassment and discrimination lawsuits<\/a> filed against her by former employees, which have since been dismissed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It was during a dark time,” she said, adding that she’s “still joyful and, like, healthy. I just got smaller.”<\/p>\n

She shared that she focuses on the positive comments from fans. “They’re telling me about how my music literally saved their lives or literally helped them heal themselves or literally got them through a dark situation or a rough job or a hard time,” she explained.<\/p>\n

“That, to me, beats a thousand hate comments of people who don’t know me and clearly don’t know what they’re talking about or know the truth,” she said. “I’d rather focus on that. And that has brought me so much joy.”<\/p>\n
