You may think a wealthy guy like Billy Joel doesn’t bother with Social Security, and well\u2026 you may be right. <\/p>\n

Of course, the odds are the Piano Man, who would qualify at age 77, does collect a monthly check. Most celebrities, big shots, uptown girls and other wealthy folks do, even if they don’t need the monthly income as much as your average joe(l). <\/p>\n

How Social Security Works <\/p>\n

Social Security isn’t needs-based, so wealth doesn’t disqualify anyone. As long as you’ve earned the required 40 work credits, as many celebrities do early in their careers, you’re entitled to a monthly check. While a star musician or movie actor<\/a> may not need the income, most still collect it because they paid into the system just like everyone else. It ain’t no crime. <\/p>\n

Let’s assume the entertainer has earned the required work credits and has reported everything properly to the IRS. We do know that Mr. Joel owed millions in back taxes at one point, but it apparently wasn’t his fault \u2014 an ex-manager allegedly created the issue by siphoning money for himself and otherwise mismanaging the star’s finances, per coverage from People<\/a>. Joel and the ex-manager eventually reached a settlement, but details were never shared with the public. <\/p>\n

To hear Billy tell it, he was an innocent man. <\/p>\n

Assuming all of that is true, how huge of a Social Security check would a superstar like Billy Joel bring in each month? <\/p>\n

Likely Scenarios for Billy Joel <\/p>\n

The figure may not be as high as you think. Yes, Social Security payments are calculated based on a person’s income, and Billy Joel has a massive income from record sales, royalties and high-grossing concerts. He rakes in millions a year, and his net worth has been estimated at $250 million, according to publications like Social Life Magazine<\/a>. He sold a Florida mansion for $42.6 million in 2024 and listed a Long Island estate for $49.9 million just this year, according to Realtor.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n

There is a cap on Social Security payouts, however. The maximum taxable earnings limit is currently $184,500 per year. With that, you can get the maximum payout allowed in 2026<\/a> \u2014 $5,181 per month. It’s a reasonable bet that if Billy Joel does collect Social Security, the checks are in that neighborhood. It would depend in part on his age when he started collecting. <\/p>\n

In other words, someone making $200,000 could qualify for the same Social Security payout as someone making $2 million, $20 million or more. <\/p>\n

There’s no need to go on and cry in your coffee for Mr. Joel or other well-heeled Americans \u2014 a monthly check for $5,181 is more than most people get.
