During an intimate conversation about balancing personal beliefs with her strong Christian faith, Black Panther’s Letitia Wright revealed she’s been the target of death threats online and explained the strong effect it’s had on her mental state.

Earlier this week, Wright joined the Mad, Sad and Bad with Paloma Faith podcast to discuss an array of topics, including dealing with the death of Chadwick Boseman, working normal jobs, the importance of having a private life, and more.

“I absolutely love my faith,” Wright said. “And I’m learning to love myself within that, despite what people may say. I’m allowed to be complex and different and whole…” The host finished Wright’s sentence, stating, “…and still be worthy of love, which you are, by the way.”

Wright followed Faith’s sentiment by adding, “Yeah, and not be told that I deserve to die.” In an attempt to comfort her, Faith told Wright that the “keyboard warriors” who write shameful things like that are just “desperate for attention, lonely, and a bit sad.”

The 32-year-old Guyanese-British actress admitted she’s been learning a lot about the power of love and forgiveness. “Forgiveness is a really hard thing when you see things like that. I don’t know if you’ve had to deal with that where you read something, and you’re just like, I have to forgive you because that’s pulling down my mental health.”

“You don’t understand what that sentence has done to me, as a human being who has been working on herself.”

People in the comments showered Wright with words of encouragement as she spoke vulnerably about her faith and personal life colliding: “We love and respect you, Letitia,” one wrote. “We got your back! Keep shining and being yourself. The exact way God made you.”

Although understanding the right to freedom of speech, the SAG Award-winning actress questioned when people should draw the line between freedom of speech and hate speech. Wright recalled seeing horrendous headlines about Amy Winehouse when she was younger and not understanding why the publications were doing that to her. When she got older, Wright watched a documentary on Winehouse and listened to her music. She believed Winehouse was so talented, but deeply misunderstood. Instead of the hate, Wright wonders why the world didn’t just care for her more. Wright said the spread of hate has become a “sad part” of being in the limelight.

Wright said she enjoys being able to open up about topics like this because, even though it can be difficult, she’s not afraid to talk about it.
