Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood have won the Bathurst 1000, after race leader Anton De Pasquale ran out of fuel on the last lap.<\/p>\n
The Dick Johnson Racing team appeared to have thrown the race away after a slow stop dropped the number 17 car from first to fifth.<\/p>\n
But a late safety car, the only one of the race, set up a three-lap sprint to the finish.<\/p>\n
De Pasquale (18) and teammate Will Davidson were leading on the final lap before his car ran out of fuel.<\/p>\n
Speaking after his victory, Kostecki was thrilled with the result.<\/p>\n
“We executed so well up until that second-last pit stop with the brake change.<\/p>\n
“But, like I’ve always said, the mountain chooses the winner.<\/p>\n
“We definitely had the fastest car today – so super proud of everyone – this Ford Mustang was on rails.”<\/p>\n
Asked about his emotions in the crucial final moments, Hazelwood said he swung “between the lowest to the extreme highs, all in about 40 seconds”.<\/p>\n
“We were begging for a safety car – this guy [Kostecki] was absolutely sending it.<\/p>\n
