It has five rear cameras, but they’re mostly redundant for the everyday user with little needs.

I would’ve written off the Motorola Signature 27 as a similar model in the spec race. But its heat management redesign and GrapheneOS support caught my eye.

It reminds me of my old Razr V3 with its ultrathin flagship body. Still, despite the improvements in Motorola’s Android phones since then, I’m hesitant to return to the brand. Here’s why.

I’m focusing my lenses on real issues

The subject is now value over flashy specs

PhoneArena’s 2026 camera habits poll found that 91% of respondents use their camera most for photos rather than video. Meanwhile, 64% said they never use filters or beauty mode, and 38% use portrait most often.

In a 2019 Android Authority poll of about 30,000 readers, 24% said they had never used manual mode and 30% said they rarely do.

The Signature 27 has a quad-camera setup, but unless you see it as a niche phone for mobile photographers, many buyers will likely ignore some of those lenses.

I don’t use my phones’ cameras enough to justify spending flagship money on camera-focused hardware.

I have a Google Pixel 8 with three cameras (main, ultrawide, selfie), Infinix GT 50 Pro with four cameras (main, ultrawide, macro, selfie), and iPhone 13 with three cameras (main, ultrawide, selfie).

That’s 10 sensors total. You could say I have most of the Infinity Gauntlet of cameras, excluding the telephoto and periscope zoom. But like the surveyed users, I mainly use my phones’ default modes.

So I’m leaking utility through the gaps of my combined $1,800 purchase.

I’d be wary of Motorola’s track record with zoom, even though the Signature 27 has a 200 MP periscope telephoto with up to 100x AI-assisted zoom.

DXOMARK, a French lab that tests phones, found in 2021 that the Edge 20 Pro’s 5x telephoto lacked detail at every zoom setting. In 2023, it also said the Edge 40 Pro’s zoom had the most room for improvement.

The original Signature fared no better. It showed zoom artifacts and over-aggressive AI. A large part of mobile photography now relies on AI processing, and I fear the trend is getting worse.

I’ve had to leave my phones’ default camera apps for alternatives that don’t overprocess every shot.

Bold cooling can’t always outrun thermal physics

It can only buy you a little more time

Credit: Lucas Gouveia / Android Police | Infinix

I commend Motorola for its innovative spirit. The Signature 27 comes with diamond-infused thermal gel and a redesigned 3D vapor chamber that reportedly spans nearly the entire chassis depth.

Thicker internal heat routing also reportedly shifts heat toward the frame and back panel instead of concentrating it near the battery.

I felt it stretched the limits of physics, and it didn’t have dramatic tech like liquid cooling.

It’s better than the original Signature. Its vapor chamber is undersized and saturates quickly during heavy tasks like gaming.

The battery and System on a Chip (SoC) then manage heat alone, and the thin frame can’t spread it fast enough. Hence, the phone throttles.

On the Signature 27, Motorola claims a 40% improvement in thermal performance with an ArcticMesh cooling system.

That’s a major improvement, and you wouldn’t need to convince me much if I were considering an upgrade. I’m hard on my phones when it comes to gaming, especially when I forget myself in gameplay.

So I would want my device to sustain performance during long sessions without degrading the battery.

However, it might be a bad thing that the chip is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. It’s a 2nm processor, and flagship chips like it generate heat that a thin chassis may not spread effectively.

                    Related

Motorola’s Signature 27 will be the first non-Pixel phone to support GrapheneOS

But there’s still no date available.

A thicker phone with the same cooling would do it better. Even with liquid cooling on my gaming phone, I see only 1–2°C drops during gameplay.

I mostly need the external MagCharge cooler fan to see real thermal improvements. So I worry Motorola’s fix buys me at best a few extra minutes and leaves the core throttling problem unsolved.

But I guess I’ll find out when the phone reaches markets later this year, or when Motorola confirms the battery specs.

Motorola wants me to trust it for seven years

            But history says I shouldn’t

Credit: GrapheneOS

Support is one of the biggest downsides of buying a flagship in a developing market.

I’d say it matters more than most specifications. You don’t want to be stranded with an expensive phone when no one is fixing the issues.

In my case, Motorola’s regional support exists, but thinly. Most brands don’t prioritize African markets for security patches or bug fixes, so you’re often months behind.

Regardless, I’m happy Motorola has partnered with GrapheneOS, as GrapheneOS confirmed on X. The software is a hardened, open source Android fork built for privacy and security.

It strips out Google’s proprietary services and gives you granular control over what your phone collects and transmits, which privacy-conscious users want.

But Motorola has a pattern of inconsistent software commitments.

It promised Android Pie for the Moto Z2 Force in August 2018, then canceled the update in June 2019 for T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint, keeping it only for the Verizon version.

Users with the Moto Z2 Force, myself included, were stuck on Android Oreo. The Moto Z4 then launched with a commitment to only one update, to Android Q.

Motorola’s recent rollouts look better. In September 2025, the Edge 60 Pro and Edge 50 Fusion were the first of its phones to get Android 16.

In October 2026, Android 17 began reaching the Signature, Razr Ultra (2026), and Edge phones. However, two recent rollouts don’t erase a pattern of broken update promises.

The Signature 27 comes with seven years of OS updates and security patches. But if GrapheneOS users are too small a market, Motorola could cut corners on support. I hope it doesn’t.

                    Related

I almost bought a Motorola phone again until I looked beyond the hardware

I still can’t ignore this problem

Motorola has an open lane to shine

Despite my reservations about Motorola’s upcoming phone, it’s always interesting to see a new phone launch with tangible upgrades.

I usually keep an eye on OnePlus outside the big three.

But with it gone from key markets, I think Motorola is a suitable alternative worth watching. Although it’s facing a lot of pressure and attention now, pressure is what cuts the perfect diamond after all.

Unless the Signature 27 is an impossible economic bet without strong structural support, there’s no reason the phone should be another casualty in a growing pile of unremarkable flagships.

The most cameras I’ve seen on a phone are on the Nokia 9 PureView.
